I'm wanting to give CX a bash this winter but have no idea where to start.

Where do I find out about local meets (I'm in West Wiltshire)?

Can I run my SS 29er with flat bars and a front disc? Its either this, a tourer or a FS.

british cycling website will have all your info. Your 29er will be fine for racing. You could get a cheap set of drops as your only running ss. I can't post a link as i'm on my phone, sorry ๐Ÿ˜†

Well, you'll probably be looking at the Western League in which case:

Details on British Cycling Website

or otherwise, find the other league details there too.

Locally, I'm sure they'd be fine with a 29er with flat bars and discs as most will allow mtbs (proper ones, not with silly wheels ๐Ÿ˜‰ ) in too.

As others have mentioned, the BC website is the place to start.

Re racing, in local events you can use more or less whatever you want, if you were to do one of the major UCI events then it's proper CX bikes only, no discs or flat bars. Oh yeah, no bar ends on your flat bars.

It WILL hurt, it will be faster than you believe possible. But it's also great fun, it's cheap, there's a fantastic atmosphere and usually some nice bacon rolls afterwards. ๐Ÿ™‚
