Hi all. I've been a lurker for quite some time, but have decided to take the plunge and post. I do have a bike related question below but thought I'd quickly introduce myself first. Like it seems many on here I'm mid 40s with some KGs to lose. I like pies (not just casseroles with lids), I'm mid divorce (she's not called Louise but is crazy!), I have suffered from sciatica, and am about to embark on (another) house renovation so lots in common with many of the recent posts on here.
Bike wise I currently have a Brompton for commuting around London, which I love but it hasn't seen much use over the past couple of months. I also have a Boardman Team Carbon road bike, which similarly hasn't been used much recently although earlier this year I was doing 50k or 60k rides most weekends on it. I do have a mountain bike, but it's a relatively old Raleigh AT40, which I've let my son have. Now that I've finished paying for the Brompton on CTW I fancy a new mountain bike. This would be mainly used for weekends in the Peak District and possibly in the Chilterns but for nothing to gnarly. On impulse, I have ordered a Cube Reaction Race 2018, which came in at £899. I'm still waiting for my voucher to be authorised, so while I have a bit of time I thought I'd check in with the experts to see what people's views are on this bike at this price, and also whether there are any alternatives that I should be looking at while I can still back out of this one. Thanks in advance.
Doesn't look bad for the money to me. But then I like cube frames and thier colour schemes too so a bit biased.
Spec wise though it looks about in the right ball park. There's a calibre hard tail on gooutdoors that's a little cheaper and a little better specced but I can't see past the aweful colour scheme.
I'm sure others will be along to make other suggestions.
Thanks for the response. My work is being really slow to issue a voucher so I won't get it this side of the Xmas break. I've had a look at the calibre and have to agree about the colour scheme! I think I'm going to put down a deposit on the cube to make sure they keep it for me until I get the voucher.
reaction race is a bit old school xc geometry but will be ok, the "TM" line is a bit more new school pn the angles though
Have a look at the 2019 Cube Acid Eagle. Same price. Pretty much all of the Cube HTs have 'old school' geometry, as mentioned above - the Acid Eagle is the same. Which company provides the scheme for you?
Thanks for that. The Cube Acid Eagle looks very similar for the same price, so I'm now less worried about missing out on this one.
I'm also interested in other brands. I've heard good things about the Bird Zero, but can't seem to find one that is affordable on the CTW scheme.
The company my work uses is called Cycle Solutions.
he company my work uses is called Cycle Solutions.
that's the halfords scheme, lots of stores can use that, many don't though as the percentage they have to pay to Halfords is extortionate compared to say cyclescheme
that’s the halfords scheme, l
No it's not. Not even vaguely related.
My voucher came through today. So I picked up the Cube. Rode about 12 miles home. Love it! May be older geometry but it's so much better than my old MTB. I'm very happy with it. Looking forward to riding over the Christmas break.
Welcome to the forum OP and enjoy the bike.
