Riding along quite happily last night and suddenly felt something move. On inspection the pedal had moved and has pretty much ripped out of the crank arm.

The pedals are fairly new and I am sure I did them up tight, they certainly didn't feel loose.

The pedal thread looks okay, but I am not an engineer and don't really know what I am looking for. I don't want to get a new crank arm and strip the threads out of that too if the pedal is a problem.

Do you think I'd be okay to reuse the pedal or should I change that too?

Pedal should be fine.
Make sure you give it a good clean and check that there is no metal from the crank stuck in the threads.
If there is just pick it out with a sharp knife.

Afraid the pedal wasn't tight enough. Precession caused it to loosen and strip out the softer metal from the crank threads. Ask a reputable bike shop to fit a helicoil and both pedal and crank will be as good as new. You aren't alone, done it myself 😳
