I am building a bike up for my son and have some XT cranks with 175mm crank arms on them. He is about 5ft 3" and I thought that perhaps he might be better with 170mm crank arms - thoughts?
*I have the XT cranks but would need to buy him some cranks if going for the shorter length, probably some of the SLX for about £90.

He'll probably be fine, give them a whirl, if he hates them, then buy some shorter ones.

my son had 175's at that height - didn't seem to be a major issue for him
he's grown 6" taller in the past 18 months so you may be making a fairly short term investment if you do go for the shorter ones.

nice, was the answer(s) I was hoping for and means he gets nicer cranks which is a bonus.
