As anybody tried or had any luck with the above? Was hoping to get some tubeless tyres and convert my second spare set of wheels to tubeless using some Gorilla tape and tubeless valves that I have. But before I buy some tyres I was wondering what my chances would be? Any feedback welcome. Thanks.
Cyclo-cross or road? If road, then don't do it, it won't work! Pressure is too high without tubeless specific rims and tyres.
CX may work, but not really worth the hassle.
Was going to be road, but your advice as changed my mind. I'll leave it and not waste any money on tubeless tyres. Much appreciated.
I thought it was just the tyres that were critical. I have been using non-tubeless rims for ages (fulcrum 5 at the minute). Non-tubeless tyres was less successful, now using schwalbe one. Need to use two layers of yellow tape...
Tyres must be tubeless (non-tubeless beads aren't man enough for road pressures), rims you can sometimes get away with, BUT you won't find out until they let go at 60kph on an alpine decent. And when they let go, there is a good chance that it'll be a proper tyre shredding explosive experience.
For the benefits of road tubeless (pretty limited compared to mtb tubeless) I'd just get some better tyres and tubes.
+1 must be tubeless tyre
I've set up Open Pros tubeless in the past but they were tricky to seat. Once they are seated they'll be fine though, on the road.
Tubeless ready rims are much easier, obviously.
Oh. FWIW I use open pros tubeless for cross, but rarely go above 2-2.5 bar.
Seems to be a lot of hysteria about road tubeless but guess it's better to be safe than sorry with cars around.
When I tried non-tubeless tyres my problem was getting sidewalls to seal and you lose a lot of psi with small volume. Bead seemed fine but was very tight anyway (pro4).
I don't think it makes as big a difference as mtb but still worthwhile.
I speak professionally and personally with this: Just don't. I had one go bang on a descent with a tyre at about 60 psi. This was before you could get reliable 700c tubeless rims and tyres. I'm now running Stans Grails with Hutchinson Toros for off-road fun and Schwalbe Ones for tarmac duties. Hannah our mechanic is running Stans Alphas with Maxxis Mud Wrestlers and they're ace too. Good luck finding that Maxxis tyre though ๐
It's not about how tight the bead is, it's the stretchiness
I tried but found the Schwalbe Ones hard to seat and seal. Probably my poor application of Stans tape. By contrast, the same tyres mounted and sealed onto my Ksyriums with no issues, no sealant, no tricks. They have been flawless. Ksyriums have no spoke holes, so don't need rim tape, for those that don't know.
As for ride quality, better than butyl inner tubes and similar to latex. The rear never survived a huge cut so i'm back with latex inner tube on the rear. Mainly because i had the tyre. When it is worn, i will replace with another tubeless.
Thanks for the reply guys, it seems there's a really mixed consensus. Being one to err on the side of caution, I'm probably going to wait and get some tubeless wheels. I like the idea of having a go at setting up the Open Pros, but don't want to risk one blowing off at speed!
a tubeless tyre won't blow off. But they are a pain to seat on OPs. That's the basic conclusion
Exactly. And a doddle on Ksyriums.
Lower than road pressure though!
