Whats the difference between these 2 tyres? and which is the best all rounder?
ive heard great things about these tyres and want to tr them for myself but at the price wanna make sure i get the right ones so any advice muchly appreciated.
also im running fulcrum red metal 5 wheels and rims but ive converted them to no tubes and am wondering should i get the ust tyres? as they will be more puncture resistant but im unsure if therell work with my rims as there not ust? bit of a noob to tubeless. thanks for your help
i used the rq 2.2 butb they misshaped and blew off the rim. been using 2.4 mk protection for a weeek so far with no probs. both roll well and the mk grip is awesome
I have just taken the plunge and ordered a pair of black chilli UST rubber queens as I had been running Minnion DHR single ply non UST's and the bead areas wear out after 6 months.
They should work with any clincher rim but I too have had previous Conti Gravity's pop off as I wasnt careful seating them when using inner tubes. No different to any other tyre IMO for this sort of issue. Just make sure you soap the rims and bead well before inflating without sealant first to get beads seated correctly-check carefully both sides all the way round (spinning the wheel should show you any high/low spots) before deflating and adding sealant and re inflating.
As for th difference between Kings and Queens from the reviews I have read is the queens come up bigger with deeper/more agressive tread pattern and obvious slight weight penalty but they should suit my style of riding hence I didnt go for the Kings.
I also bow to Jedi's more agressive air born style which may also have bearing on the issue of tyre deforming and parting company with the rim.
I want some fast rolling tires with lots of grip, am probably going to go for the 2.2. Need to get my mud tires of there slowing me down lol
I did read that the Queens were more gravity aimed than cross country but for me having been doing XC rides on Minnions for the past 9 months nothing will be as draggy anyway but I like riding off the beaten trail. The Kings may be a better bet dependant on if your usual trail choice is trail centre graded surface. (prepares to be shot down in flames now)
Bit of a Conti obsessive here and have tried the Queens, Mountain King II and X Kings all in Chilli compound. The Queens are BIG & more aggressive, the Mountain Kings are middle ground and the X Kings are very fast rolling. For a fit and forget I've now settled on the Mountain Kings with the protection casing, 2.4 do fit in 32 Fox forks OK. The X Kings are now my HT which I just use for cranking out the non technical miles. I would not go full UST now the protection casing is very good.
I wouldn't buy 2.2 black chilli RQs again - the sidewalls are very weak and the tyre itself doesn't feel as stable as the 2.4. They are a very fast tyre for the size though. I'm now running a 2.25 crossmark on the rear which seems better all round than the 2.2 RQ.
I've got Fulcrum red metal ust wheels with MK ll on front, can't fault it so far, if it wasn't for my third chest infection this year I'd be testing it further tomorrow ๐
I found the RQ slow for xc trail. X kings are brill, running one on the rear now

and I used the MK2 yesterday in Grisedale, they seems great on the Rocky DH's. still have to try them at a trail centre or more singletrack orientated rides yet to be able to make a full assessment though.
The MK's come up VERY small, that is for sure
I wouldn't use non-UST Continentals tubeless. Sidewalls deform, loads of cases of it happening.
Long time reader, first time poster here.
I've run the RQ 2.2 BC and the MK1 2.4 Pro BC on some of my bikes and a friend of mine has run a MK1 2.2 Pro BC.
I think the 2.4 MK1 is a very grippy, well clearing and fast rolling tyre. I use this on the front of my HT and the grip from it on wet roots and rocks isn't far off a Maxxis SuperTacky Swampthing but it rolls so much better. The only problem I've had is a couple of punctures after some hard landings in some rocky conditions that I haven't had with Maxxis or Schwalbe tyres at similar pressures. The 2.2 MK1 is very small in width, volume and tread size compared to the 2.4.
The 2.2 RQ is slightly wider with bigger volume than the 2.4 MK1 but the sidewalls sticks out beyond the tread. I use this tyre primarily on the front of my FS and again find it rolls well and offers great predictable grip, a bit better than the MK1 in drier conditions and about the same in wetter conditions. It's also lighter than the 2.4 MK1.
As for the best all rounder, I'd go with the 2.2 RQ. I don't run tubeless so I can't comment on that and I haven't used the MK2.
