So, having tried Jelly babies whilst riding today, I found them surprisingly good for sustaining energy, far better than Haribo Tangfastic (my normal swwet of choice) as Ididn't seem to get the 'crash' after 20 mins. Anyone able to tell me (scientificly(ish)) why? I normally ride with powerbar gels and shots but jelly babies seem to do the same job, in a far nicer, cheaper package.

I always ride with bag of Jelly Babies in my pack. Whenever they are 1/2 price at the supermarket I stock up. Liqurice Allsorts are also pretty good and maybe a packet of Fig Rolls.

I used to eat the energy bars and gels etc but realized I may as well just eat what I like and that's cheap.

I used to do Tangfastics but I find now the fizzy stuff on them can give me a stomach ache.

Torq gels are my favourite because they don't taste like s**t, but I take jelly babies or haribo strawbs on my shorter rides.

OP- I'm type 1 (insulin dependent diabetic) and use jb's when hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) hits me...jelly babies are THE quick fix/kick in hard n fast antidote when ur about to Bonk. Think of how you feel when you're blood sugars feel low then multiply that feeling by 1000 for a diabetic and you can understand what I mean...jb's ftw ๐Ÿ˜€

Jelly Babies do seem to work well. I tend to carry them and Torq gels, as noted above they taste far better than most, GU espresso gels are nice too but jelly babies are a far more cost effective option and I usually take a couple of Nuun to stick in a bottle if i think electrolytes are going to be more of an issue.

I've always got a Mr Toms peanut brittle packed in my back pocket/ hydropack- peanuts give great slow energy release.....

Jelly babies of the Bassett's variety used to give me a sickly feeling, whether eaten when out riding or not. Having discovered Waitrose own brand jelly babies which have more flavour and no sickliness I'm a happier bunny.

Powerbar gel v's Jelly Babies
Better because:
You can't get "forest fruit bukkake" from jelly babies unless you heat them to a dangerous temperature
