[Closed] Commuting from Penistone to Sheffield

Hi,

I am looking to move to Penistone and have a job in Sheffield City Centre. I was wondering if it is possible/plausible to cycle to work. Does anybody know any routes, approx distance involved and the proportion of the journey spent on roads vs trails/cycle paths?

Thanks
David

Yep - the trans pennine trail goes that way. Depending on your route it's about 10 miles into town.

As Pook says, the TPT does that job nicely. Link it up with Beeley Woods and you'll be able to get as far as Hillsborough on smooth, traffic free routes.

Another quick question. Would this route be usable all year round or is it only really feasible in good weather and light conditions?

Thanks
David

all year round - as long as you've ok lights and you're happy riding in the dark it's pretty smooth all the way through. A very nice commute, I reckon. Eventually (some years away, though) you'll be able to pop out of Beeley woods, put in a quiet half mile on Claywheels lane and then cross over onto the new XC track on parkwood springs which'll get you to Shalesmoor almost traffic free.

Yeah, if you have a wormhole, there's the whole of the council tip & more between claywheels & parkwood

I use this to visit the Sheffield Tap at Sheffield station,I take the trans-pennine trail from Oxspring to Deepcar, cut through Wharncliffe woods, and take cheeky route from oughtibridge to Claywheels lane ,then there's quite a lot of cycle paths in the station, takes about an hour, and traffic free until you get to the end of Claywheels lane.
Ian
P.S I ride up Blackergreen lane to get from Silkstone to Oxspring to make the journey more interesting.Lt me know if you move up,I could show you round this end,Pook's probably the best man for Sheffield and and the Peak

That cheeky is now a fully fledged cycle path now is it not?

Assuming you mean the one that's wide enough to drive down & follows the river

I'm not sure,it's not clearly waymarked and on my old OS map,it shows as a footpath, although as you say,its wide enough to drive down.

Pretty sure it's been upgraded now. I've never had a problem using it, though I tend to only use it when riding out to wharncliffe, not back.

Plus with the speed of traffic on penistone rd at rush hour, you could probably walk faster than the cars, I used to easily pass stuff commuting from Hillsborough to the wicker easily

I'm not sure the maps and signage have quite kept up with developments along Beeley bottom but yes, ride it at your leisure, totally fine. In fact I think Cycle Sheffield had something to do with the resurfacing, no?

Another quick question. Would this route be usable all year round or is it only really feasible in good weather and light conditions?

Fully passable year round without issue, but you'll be shopping for full mudguards fairly quickly.

podge, there's an entrance to parkwood by the railway bridge over herries road south, about 500m from the end of claywheels. The plan is that it'll all be connected when the tip is fully filled in, so it's traffic free all the way.

Is the little snicket just downhill of the viaduct currently ride-able? If so, there's no need to wait for Parkwood to open - using this snicket to get to Wardsend scrap yard then dropping onto Club Mill Lane will get you as far as Hillfoot bridge almost entirely traffic free, from which point there's cycle paths running all the way into the centre of town.

I'd welcome a hint,email in profile.

Slight hijack as it's MTB stuff rather than commute fare, but anyone here ever use the 'top of the woods to the snooker place' route to finish a Wharny ride?

The first part of the tip isn't due to close till 2018 and that's still under review, hover bikes will be available by the time the whole thing has shut & trails built.

I'd forgot about the track down by the scrap yard

Not too sure where you mean with that, I only ever ride from the bottom of the woods & back down claywheels. Not done that for ages either

The snicket is rideable (apart from the entrance steps), then you can cross the rail bridge, steep climb past the graveyard, skirt the top of the tip (there is a path, I've ridden it in the last year), out onto the top of parkwood and then descend by the ski village into neeps end and shalesmoor.

It's not very direct (never said it was) - I'd probably ride the neeps end back roads instead for day to day commuting.

jackthedog we use a trail we call "back edge" not sure if it's the same. Finishes in Fox Hill/wadsley and is rather fun.

podge, you're always such a misery guts ๐Ÿ˜‰

Actually, many moons back there was talk of having a couple of Sheffield group rides to explore each other's local areas, maybe we should reconsider reviving the idea

Just had a spin down to check. Glass smooth tarmac the entire length from factory to Oughtibridge cricket ground.
