[Closed] Cheapest way to fix/replace P7 DX light

Just went out for a ride, and my DX light turned itself off for no apparent reason, then spent the rest of the ride turning itself off and on at 10-15 second intervals. I've already had to replace the battery for the MJ-828 version which is weather sealed, and now the light itself is knackered. Totally unresponsive to the clicky at the back, and un-plugging and plugging back in has no effect. I went for a very wet and muddy ride on Sun, and I think it may have got damp.

So can I swap out the driver for something different and re-use the housing? Or would it be better to give it up and buy a new light to work with the 8.4V battery I already have?

Suggestions welcome. Cheapest solution that provides a reliable fix is what I'm after.

You could try taking the head unit apart and check for loose connections or any swarf floating about?
That'd be free for starters!

I took it to bits when I got back. No smoking holes in the PCB. I'm thinking that the easiest fix is to buy a new light head from Magicshine UK. I suppose I could try sending it back to DX. Not sure what the warranty is like.

Hi

I sent my faulty light unit to Trout. He sorted it for a very reasonable price (alot less than a new unit).

Regards

Interesting, I’ve had a similar intermittent problem with the switch on my DX lately, seems to be related to cold, problem disappears if I store it indoors, but if I leave it in my Garage then it just refuses to switch properly….

Spangelsaregreat – How reasonable was Trout’s price, I’m quite tempted to replace the Head unit but it’s silly to bin a perfectly repairable unit if the cost of fixing is minimal… or I might have a go at it myself…. I may ping him a message then…

evel - I've PM'd you.

cookeaa - mine refused to switch properly for some time before it went completely awol. I needed to hold down the button for a long time, and on switch off, the LED would sometimes still emit a faint glow.

Mine actually started to play up after it was stored in the garage for a while, so it may be related to that, but I'm sure it's been in and out of the garage quite a bit.

it's weird, it was fine for well over a year, obviously a cumulative effect of low temperature and frequency of operation, I emailed trout just to see if he could tell me a PN or just sell me a suitable switch, waiting on a response now...

Should be a simply job to replace the switch, but I'm also tempted by trouts XML kits, what to do...?
