Don't forget that even XT 11-34 only have an ally carrier for the lowest 6 gears. 7,8 and 9 are steel straight into your hub. Not sure what types have an entirely ally carrier.

But can be cheap

Assuming you're talking 9-speed? I like the SRAM PG990, and if you don't mind the 'tango orange' colour, CRC are doing them for 45 quid at the moment - buy a couple and use a ten quid off voucher to sweeten the deal...

Nothing at all, XG-999/XX are the only ones that will do no damage to your freehub body, but seeing as it's basically cosmetic I really wouldn't get too het up on it.

XT or PC990 will be fine, SLX will be alright.

XG-999 at 200 and something quid equals about 5 ally freehub bodies!
As njee20 says the damage to the freehub is mainly cosmetic although a buddies SLX cassette has marked his freehub more than my XT has marked mine. Could have a lot to do with his longer legs and extra 3 stone though.

Loose cassettes will do more damage too. SLX does have fewer sprockets on a carrier, 3 IIRC.

Rose bikes are doing the XT at £37.90

http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/article/shimano-deore-xt-sprocket-cs-m770-spider-arm-9-speed-11-34/aid:221494

It's £5 postage but if you 'Like' them on Facebook you get a £10 off voucher code so it'll come in at £32.90.

I don't use FB but used the wifes account to get the code and it worked fine.
