I'm thinking of some new road wheels and saw these:

Normally I'd run a mile from anything too cheap to be true and unproven but I am really tempted to risk them - they'd only get dry weather use and WCS is the freehub dies & I have to replace that hub (nothing to go wrong with a front hub right?)
Would you risk it?
The thing that bothers me is the claimed weight of them. That's a bit light for my tastes, even if they were expensive, I'd expect them to break. For cheap hubs you can't beat Shimano. 🙂
They do look nice and seem pretty light. Is it easy to get a replacement freehub though, if it goes wrong? If not you will have gone to a lot of effort building them to have to replace the hub.
Planet X seem to have some good deals on their own branded wheels at the moment for not much more.
I've found Miche Racing Box hubs to be excellent for the money:
£63 less fiver usual discount less your wiggle discount. Bargin.
EDIT - oh, 24hole - do you really want that?
It's another of my crazy project ideas that may go nowhere.
I was looking at Planet X model B wheels, they seem to achieve their lightness by using **** all spokes (20/24). I thought about applying the same logic to regular rims like open pros, and by using these hubs and revolution spokes I can get 1350gm wheels for under £200!
What could possibly go wrong??? 😉
Open Pro (or any regular rim) in 20 and 24 holes?
Yup!
*awaits being told it's an insane idea etc*
You mean a standard open pro with, say 36h and a 24h hub and then built so that some of the spoke holes in the rim aren't used?
If so, I've certainly seen it done and it works though they do take in water in the rain and the ones I've used felt noticeably flexy when pushed hard.
Yes - much as I thought, thanks.
Worth a go I think...I will have the lightest wheels on the heaviest road bike in East Lothian!
Knowing both clubber and al, with the greatest of respect to both parties, al is less likely to flex his wheels 😉
🙂
I'll bet that you'd give them a good flex too, ADH, eh, eh 😉
ADH you weigh more than me no?
Seriously though - lighter wheels flex, innit?
IME lighter wheels that are designed well and made of carbon can be very stiff but at £200 it's going to be the usual light/stong/cheap compromise.
ADH you weigh more than me no?
*admires Xmas paunch*
Undoubtably old bean. I wouldn't do it, but even with your thunderous bhp'age mashing away at the transmission you'd probably get away with it.
