does any one know what these little pins are for in my large chain ring, there is 4 of them, when in the small ring on the front and small on the back the chain catches these and makes a annoying ping sound. I don't ride in this gear combination its just something I noticed when putting a new chain on tonight with the bike on the stand, sure it did not do this before? I changed the chain like for like, its a kmc on xt 2x10

secondly this may seem a stupid question but is the small chain ring worn, teeth seem to be shaping like a sharks fin and im getting major chain suck in this gear, switch to the large gear and its fine, so should be ok with just replacing the small one and the big one seems ok?
have been comutiung to work a few times, 6 miles of with is off road and is a complete bog with all the rain, loads of mud and leaves clogging up rear tyre and drive, chain snapped so replaced finding these problems, looks like the mud has been grinding away the gear

The pins are there to help the chain climb from the snall ring to the larger.
And yes the teeth on the small ring do look worn. Is this the first new chain fitted? I only ask as it looks like the chain was quite worn so you may have to replace the cassette as well

this will be the second chain, the second one did around 100 miles before it got clogged with mud and snapped, I did not have the problem with the chain suck before I did 6 miles in the mud.
a new cassette did cross my mind, when I first changed the chain I noticed it started to skip on the small cog on the back but only if I was in the small cog on the front, don't ride in that combination and was just testing so hasn't been an issue

You should get yourself a chain wear guage so you can replace your chain before it starts to wear your chainrings and cassette,
