Ive been looking into various bike components and ive always been under the assumption that a chain is a chain, why is there such a price difference in chains? Is it a case of you pay for the name? Or something that im missing?

Weight mostly, pricier ones are lighter (hollow pins) etc

As long as you stick with a good brand they are all perfectly serviceable. Sram and Connex chains come with useful joiner links so you can take them apart whenever you want to clean where as shimano ones are joined with a permanent link. There can be slight differences in shifting as some chains are cut and ramped a bit more than others. Finally some more expensive chains have better corrosion resistance via coatings etc.. some of the expensive Connex ones are stainless steel so last for ages with minimal rust and corrosion.
