I have just had a new freewheel turn up, and it looks to me like the pitch on the freewheel is too long for the chain. I thought basically everything was 1/2" now, is this not the case or am I making some other mistake?
Short vid showing chain 'picking up' off the freewheel when backpedaling.
Old chain?
Terrible chainline?
Everything has been 1/2" pitch for a couple of decades. 10mm pitch died on it's arse. Other, odder pitches, even longer ago.
Chainline is pretty good, and the chain isn't that old. If anything it looks to be the other way, the pitch of the freewheel is greater than the chain pitch.
It’s not the pitch of the chain. It’s that the chain is too narrow.
The chain fitted looks to be for a geared bike (peened rivets 3/32nd width) whereas the freewheel needs a 1/8in chain.
The narrow chain is not sitting down fully into the teeth of the freewheel resulting in this effect of the pitch being wrong.
Looks like chain too narrow for the teeth so not fully seating. What width freewheel is it 3/32 or 1/8th? I'm guessing 3/32 as nothing but a 1/8th chain would even slightly work with a 1/8th but have had issues with very narrow chains on some 3/32 before
Edit - post collision with above!
You definitely need a wider chain.
