Putting a new chain on my commuting bike 1x7 (the new 1x9!) with the following parts:
32T front chainring
11-28 7spd cassette
Shimano 105 short cage rear mech
Is the best rule of thumb still big ring to big ring without going through the mech +2 links or can I afford to go shorter?

Don't go shorter. You may be able to go longer though.

what about round the big rings and through the mech +0
