As title, just about to build up a 1 x 9 setup and wondered what chain device people are running. Superstar plasma at £35 is top of my list at the moment.

Im running just a superstar XCR Single Ring Chainguide and a bash ring.
cant say ive noticed that its dropped the chain yet either, although I think my choice of a white cage probably wasnt my smartest idea, as after only a couple of weeks it looks very manky and oily.

Ive got a Superstar Its good for the money but I would only class it as OK really. I found it hard to setup right especially compared to a LG1+ I cant get it to sit right due to my chain stays being so low and the lower guide touching them. It would probably be ok on a HT or say an orange 5 where the stays wouldn't get in the way. It is quite a lot cheaper than the LG1+ so it is definitely worth considering. I have been thinking about getting the dremel on mine and slightly modify the lower guide so I can rotate it more and hope it sits better.
This isnt a very goo pic but here you go.

is that bottom guide touching the chainstay? top guide looks like it could be positioned to follow the shape of the ring better too. Is that poor design or user error? 😛

Gamuts fantastic as shown in pic above. I've got a Gamut p20 for sale. No bashguard. ISCG '05. £25 posted. Think I have got an e13 BB adaptor somewhere if needed.

e13LG1+ are very good.

I had issue with a Straitline Silent Guide: didn't work great with a 32T ring, though ring was ramped. Sure would work much better with a 34 or 36T due to design.

problem with that Superstar guide may just be a combination of backplate design and low chainstays on that bike: diff guides just fit different bikes better. I'd be wary of running that as is though: backplate hanging way down at bottom likely to rotate the whole guide round when hit.

Poor design slowrider. If I lower the top guide any more it rubs loads on the chain because of the internal profiling. The lower guide doesn't touch it is about 2mm away in the hope that I would be able to rotate the top round as much as possible. If I could rotate it say 10-15 degrees I would be able to lower the top guide a bit more.

DeeW, does the P20 'Need' a bash to work or can you just adjust the top guide and bottom roller so they are close enough that the chain doesn't come off the ring?

If you got a pic as well that would be good, interested, email in profile.

The top guide is designed to be used with a bash. The chain can still be derailed out-over if there's no bashguard to stop it.

As fish has said the gamut does need a bash. I will send a pic anyway.

I'm using an E-Thirteen LG1+, I think it's very good. Be careful with the frame you have as my bro had problems with the BB mount adaptor?

Looking at it, the rear swing arm is inline if not behind the edge of the BB so anything attached should clear. That saying, until I try I won't know for sure!!

Shame about the P20, running XTR cranks with the 'Jones' mod so don't think a bash guard will fit.

I run a MRP 1X Chain Guide, coz i don't have ISCG'05 tabs on my hardtail.

No probs up to now 🙂

E13 Hive on my HT: Fits by replacing a BB spacer. Top only. It was slightly tricky to fit correctly. Adjusts for large to medium size chainrings. Aligns OK with the chainring bolted in the "middle chainring" position on the SLX cranks, without needing chainring spacers.

I haven't dropped a chain with it, but I'm not knarly rad sick or anything. A bit expensive. Consider the Superstar alternative.

Correct, its a 1st generation Nomad.
It fitted fine, though having fitted many chain devices over the years from working in bike stores, I know all the quirks and tricks to getting them fitted and working.
I used an adapter mount as my bike has no ISCG tabs. The mount replaced the B/B spacer, but I had to add a 1mm spacer between the B/B and mount so that the inner face of the crank cleared the chain device. I then used another 1mm spacer behind the cassette to push it out a little and get the chainline back to where it should be.

From experience I find that mrp guides are slightly wider on the top guide so it's a doddle to set them up so they don't rub in any gear. E13's can run silent but it takes a lot more fiddling/bodging
