[Closed] Centrelock lockring tool?

[#2432291]

I've just bought some 150mm Revs from Merlin that came with a free DT Swiss 240 15mm front hub. It's centrelock and I've bought a 6 bolt convertor to go with it.

The converter comes with a lockring (It also clamps on with a screw) which I can't do up with the tool I thought would work - A cassette tool. (I thought they were the same...)

Anybody know if you need a special tool for a 15mm centrelock hub?

To be honest, I'm thinking of not bothering being as the convertor clamps on anyway......But I do like to do things properly! 🙂

Some lockrings use an HT2 bb tool.

Yeh what he said... dunno bout DT swiss but both my slx 20mm xt 15mm and xtr 15mm centrelock hubs have used HT2 tool to tighten/loosen

If you have an oversize axle you would usually use a lock ring with notches on the outside rather than the inside. This tightens up with the spanner that you put an external BB cup in with. I don't know of a tool that will fit an internally notched lock ring on a 15mm hub.

The only lockring adaptor that I have delt with was done up with a cassette tool. This was on a Deore wheel.

Edit: The previous posters make sense.

HT2??? Hmmmmmm. I don't think it's that big. It's just normal centrelock. Are you SURE? which tool do you mean? It has internal splines.

I'm sure, I did up a mate's centrelock the other day, with an HT2 BB tool.

Normal Qr wheels both ends.

Surely you have such a tool, try it and see!

Not 100% on dtswiss stuff and the only pic's I can find dont have the lock ring fitted helpfully! but since they license the design from the big S i would have though it would be the same

I do yes. It's not even close to a HT2 spanner, not in the same sport, never mind the same ballpark!

Ah just saw you said internal splines, unless that was a sneaky edit. Got a photo of it?

Not 100% on dtswiss stuff

The lockring came with the converor, not the hub. TBH hub make is irrelevant I suppose.

Nope, it's NOT a DT Swiss convertor. It's an Ashima one, but the pic of the Shimano adaptor shows the lockring more clearly

[img] [/img]

And, sorry, that's not going to tighten with a HT2 tool! 🙂

This one:
http://www.dtswiss.com/Products_archiv/Accessories-(1)/Hub_Accessories/Center-lock-IS-adaptor.aspx

is the non-15mm converter, and is a cassette tool.

Ahah, does a cassette tool fit the lockring off the wheel, on its own? But then not fit it on the hub?

if so it's cos you need a 15mm adapter like BG's link, with the external splines for an HT2 tool.

thats a cassette tool one but if your running 15mm forks you may struggle to get the axle thru the hole in the lockring thats why they use the HT2 type ones [EDIT - i think so anyway i may be talking cobblers though]

But then not fit it on the hub?

Nope. Becasue the 15mm spacer gets in the way, the tool isn't deep enough.

Your adaptor is designed for a QR hub. I am 99% certain there is no tool that will tighten it on a 15mm hub if it only has internal notches.

No problem with that, just can't tighten the lockring.

The shimano pic was just to point out the lockring. The one I actually have is this one, with the same lockring:

[img] [/img]

As you can see it clamps on too, so as I said in the OP it looks like I'll have to not bother with the lockring.
--------------

Considering that, and considering Merlin recommended it to me (And are now including one in the offer!) D'ya think I should tell them it doesn't fit properly and get my £9 back?????

The Shimano adapter for QRs uses a cassette locking/removal tool.

The Shimano adapter for 15mm hubs uses an HT2 tool.

Sounds to me like you've cobbled together a POS

yeh looking at what I have here its the same adapter just different lockring's between the 2 shim c/l adaptors so if you can find a lockring on it's own somewhere that's all you need. I would have thought merlin could/should sort you out with one to make it work properly if they sold it to you knowing you wanted to use them together as its not quite the right thing.

No, that tool will not work. Merlin have sold you the wrong thing. That adaptor is designed for a QR hub.

Just rang Merlin. The adaptor is going back to them and I was thinking of a CL disc instead, but I'm still going to have the same problem aren't I????

Not yet I haven't, and all done on the advice of Merlin. But thanks for the insult.

Peter was this what you bought?

http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/Bike+Shop/Frame++Forks/Forks++Shocks/Rockshox+Suspension+Forks/Rockshox+Revelation+RLT+118+Tapered+Steerer+++DT240+Hub_RSREV.htm

I have them on order but they heve not arrived yet 😥 . It says they come with the 6 bolt adapter, does this mean that the adapter is not included?

yeh you need a external type lock ring TBH Normally they come with the hub as you do kinda need it to attach the rotor! but if merlin will sort you out with one then you can either use it on the adaptor or on a c/l rotor. C/L is the way forward once your sorted tho. [EDIT - sorry misread your post can't they just send you a lockring??]

Mac, they've changed the offer since I ordered mine last week. I got 10% off the whole lot, that offer has gone and they've added the same adaptor that I have bought. And it won't work. I've just told them that over the phone.......

I ordered them last week and got the additional 10% too 🙂 , i really thought it said it included the 6 bolt adapter then as well. I guess you have asked?

It is still a good deal without the adapter but it will just be a bit of a pain to souce that bit.

Any chance you can email me with the best number to contact merlin on - email is in profile. I'm a little concerned about my order as i think parcel force may have lost it.

PP I had a similar problem with On One centre lock hubs. On One advised me just to tighten the clamp bolt on the adaptor (before finally tightening the rotor bolts) and forget about the locking ring thing. I did that and it worked fine.

Currently that's the only option, but I don't like it and I was thinking of new brakes later this year, possibly CL discs, and without the lockring I'm buggered. I cannot find the lockring for sale on it's own so far.
When Merlin ring me back I'm going to be very nice to them and ask them to swap it for a 6-bolt hub if they can't provide the correct lockring.

this is the shim external 15/20mm lockring which would work fine if all else fails but hopefully merlin will sort ya out
