I've worn out the forum search for things like 'Ti 29er' 'TD-1' 'Pegasus' etc, so it's time to dive in and cop some grief for what bike thread.
I want something light, racey, 29er and Ti for hooning about singletrack/building up to XC racing next year/maybe some 24hr stuff. I has to be SS and ultimatly Alfine-able.
I thought I'd set my heart on a Ragley TD1 as the more niche than quiche option. I'm not sure I like the sliding dropouts though.
Then I was convinced the EBB and normal length fork on a Singular Pegasus would be better. A look at the price mostly put paid to this idea (I thought it was the same as the TD1).
Now I find myself considering a steel 853 Niner, or maybe even a Swift, or something else with an EBB. But I really wanted Ti. And lightness. And no paint to chip and look tatty after 6 months.
What haven't I thought of, and how stupid am I for even considering 24hrs on a rigid bike, possibly SS too?
The sliders don't put me off, I just think an EBB looks like a better option from an engineering POV (ie less chance for user error meaning the wheel not precisely aligned straight).
As mentioned, Pegasus probably top of list, but TD1 has always been the dream.
on the other hand - if the frames not welded straight (which frames frequently aint) it gives you the oportunity to straighten the wheel out ....
also - do you think that if your wheels not precisely aligned it makes sod all difference to your ride experiance ? - it would be quite easy to get it precise with a tape measure - or if your real anal a vernier ....
I was thinking about brake disc rub. Not a problem with the sliders/disc mount attached?
Trailrat, what's that weigh? Even with the half kilo of Brooks? 😀
sliders are a big plus for me too.
Is the TD-1 rigid fork only?
weighs 25 with the brooks and a rohloff - the weights in the hub. without the hub it weighs 17.8lbs as i had it set up for the puffer in SS
its for a 445mm rigid fork - which is a std 26" rigid fork for 100mm correction
im going to play with a set of reba 29ers i have lying about and travel spacers to put some suspension on mine for back country week in the alps !
They're both great frames I'm sure, but different propositions. Do you want the option of front suspension? Ever? If "yes", there's your answer.
As a Pegasus owner I can vouch for what a wonderful thing it is, particularly for long rides. Whilst I reckon the TD-1 would also be a marvellous ride, though a bit more arse-up I would think, I wouldn't want to limit myself to rigid only (although I will be getting a rigid fork for the Peg soon). The Peg is about £400 more, and if that's the frame that really floats your boat, I'd save up the extra. The lead time should give you the opportunity to do so anyway.
I knew about the forks difference. I'm happy with the arse-up idea, but the never-put-a-sus-fork thing does play on my mind.
Whilst I'm not scraping the pennies together for my next meal, I can't find a way to say £400 extra without it sounding like a lot of money.
If the Peg had been £1200 I'd have pressed the buy button by now. I need more time yet to convince myself it's that much better than a TD1.
Are there no other options circa £1200?!
to put you off the td-1 for ever ....
riding home from work last night via the woods. 700x 32 cx tires , a carradice camper longflap and some sexy sexy tri bars to keep out the ever present headwind on the way home !
if i didnt have hydros on it i would have stuck woodchipper/luxys on it !
whats a normal lynskey cost ?
yeah you're in Lynskey Ridgeline territory with £1200 I think.
Ye gods remove that picture!
I've just sold my Roadrat to partly fund this, because I just couldn't do what I wanted with cross tyres.
The Brooks/Carradice combi stays on the road bike. And tri bars????
This threads gone more niche than I thought already. 😉
my roadbike blew up - front hub shattered after 15 years of use a couple weeks ago so i had to use this or the merida till i get round to aquiring a wheel..... this is cheaper to run and is banned from propper off road due to the fork creak so i dont mind butchering it just now !
Fork creak = what fork? Carbon Exotic perhaps?
very very old pace rc30/31 that i got off a mate which was fine till i rode with ss stu and sheldon on their "freeroad" bikes .... it let out a few worrying cracks then ....
then i hit a tree in the middle of the night at puffer
now i dont trust it ......
I ran a TD-1 and used it for Kielder last year. Fantatstic frame, worked exceptionally well with the shorter forks. Got back ache with position over that distance, but more to do with core strength. My one gripe was the sliding dropouts which slipped - i even upgraded to the Paragon version (can't remember details) but still not 100%. The slot-dropout and one chain-tug on my ti On-one never gave me any issues. If you know you wnat a rigid-only bike it's a great frame however.
how did your sliders slip ?
did you remove the adjustment bolts or something ?
do remember to lube the bolts though 😀
I have a TD-1 and love it. I run it with 465mm Carbon forks.
Tried it with 445's and 465's and like one of Ragley's test riders I preferred how it rode with the 465's. I know Brant says you can't or shouldn't run a sus fork on it, and I haven't tried it myself yet, but I think you would easily get away with a set of 80mm travel forks on a TD-1.
I have a friend with a Pegasus and he loves it. The price and toe overlap with that frame put me off tho so I went for the TD-1.
toe overlap
Is that on a smaller size frame? I'm 6'2" so looking at the 20" TD1 or XL Pegasus.
His frame is an 18" so I can't comment on the larger frame Pegasus. My TD-1 is a 20". I'm 6' but have long legs so although I have no standover clearence the frame fits me well once I'm on.
If you like a frame with a long top tube then the TD-1 will fit you well. Don't worry too much about being told you must run this length rigid fork etc, try everything and stick with what you like.
Lynskey Ridgeline 29er with Rohloff.

SS and Rohloff specific dropouts available.
If you're not in a hurry, just wait until CRC have their next 10% off everything sale. Their last one was about two weeks after I bought mine. 🙄
I'll be riding 12 and 24 solos on it this year.
how low is your gearing graham - looks titchy ... i have 38:14(poss 15) and spend most of my time in gear 3 - 5
34x13
I think 32x13 is the lowest allowed, so I'm not far off that.
1st gear is 1.7m, equivalent to 22x30
14th gear is 8.9m, near enough the same as 42x11
So I've got about the same range of gears as a 29 speed, except for the lowest 22x34, which is below walking pace anyway.
I've never seen a 14t Rohloff sprocket, so if you're not sure what you've got, I'll assume it's 15t.
That gives you a range of 1.6m to 8.6m.
You're lower geared than me. 😛

toe overlap? i'm 6ft 2" on a large Pegasus, no toe overlap issues here, i only have size 10 shoes though, no clown size feet 😉

Thinking about this, what about the new On-one ti 29er http://twentynineinches.com/2010/11/11/world-exclusive-on-one-report-2-ti-xc-29er/ if it ever comes out?
Wasn't the On-One Ti XC supposed to be out 3 months ago? Glad I didn't wait around for it and went for the TD-1 instead.
Last night, out riding with a mate, I was almost convinced that I wanted a Peg but couldn't afford it, so I was going to buy a Swift (same Geometry, right?).
This morning I woke up with the same mantra as before "no more steel bikes!".
Should I get a Swift and do a carbon fork lightweight build so I've got something to ride for the summer? Then I've got some time to sell everything I own for a Pegasus at the end of the year and swap the parts across, or maybe the Swift will convince me the racey TD1 option was best all along.
you appear to be correct.
how ever i shall leave mine as is for now because staying in gets 3-5 = no annoying grindy sound 😀
dyffers - have you no bike at the moment ?
Haha, no. I'm thinning down my 9 bikes to fund the Ti 29er. Only 26er MTB at the mo though.
Dyffers, it sounds like you want a TD1.
You do. 🙂
Whereabouts are you based - if you wanted a decent test ride on one and were somewhere north-westy I'm sure we could sort something out

That would be great (thanks for the offer), but I'm in Dorset.
No toe overlap problems on my Pegasus either (6'3" with size 12 feet on a L frame). I'm a bit biased, but the Pegasus is the best bike I've ever ridden. Here's my witter from my first couple of rides:

If you're ever up London-way, I'm sure we could sort you a test ride. Or ask Sam, he'll have a good idea of where the Pegasus owners are.

Again, that'd be great/very kind Aidan. I'll be watching with interest how you get on on the Peg on the Tour Divide, especially as you'll be able to comment compared with a Swift.
I take it yours is SS. What sort of weight reduction did you get between the two (did you reuse some of the components?)? Or is it all about the ride?
D'ya reckon the slightly lower front end on the TD1 would be a massive nono for multiday rides?
Dyffers, if you may happen to want a large then drop me a line. I have a frame which was ordered then cancelled from the last batch which I could do a good price on as I need to move it on.
I don't have any scales and I never weighed my Swift so I don't know how much of a weight saving there is. It is one of those bikes that you pick up and think "Ooooh!".
I think the lighter weight is probably part of what makes the Pegasus a more agile ride than the Swift but not the whole story. I didn't get to try the two back-to-back: I rode my Swift for ages, went off to Alaska and rode a loaded-up Pugsley, then straight onto the Pegasus when I got back.
My Pegasus is SS only, but (unless you take the one Sam already has - I don't know the spec for that) they can customise those fittings for you.
As with all things, attempt to try before you buy. I imagine you'll be able to play around with the low front end of a TD-1 if it bothers your (bar, stem choice). I have modest risers on my Pegasus which is against the consensus for 29er setup, but they were what I already had and work great so I haven't been moved to throw any money at a wide flat bar.
As a Pegasus owner I can vouch for what a wonderful thing it is, particularly for long rides
Wot 'e said
If you want to throw your leg over a medium Peg at the WRT, you'd be very welcome. No toe overlap issues on this frame size either, though my feet are a size 7.
To be fair, I do get some toe overlap on my medium Pegasus, but I'm a bit freakish...5'9" with size 11 hooves. Anyway, the toe overlap doesn't bother me. It's never an issue at riding speeds above a crawl & you subconsciously modify your technique to accommodate it.
Oh, if you're going to the WRT, you can have a go on my L Pegasus.
Yep, I'll be at the WRT.
A go on a L Pegasus, even just round the car park, would be like winning the prize draw! 😀 Might take you up on that.
