This problem is bizarre.

Recently changed the chain for a new one as it was looking a bit sloppy. 9 speed shimano XT shifter, shadow type.

New chain on old cassete wouldnt grip, so put on a new 9spd XT cassette. The chain still wouldnt grip.

So put another new chain on, same issue.

Have re indexed the gears, the shifter is in good shape, no real play or slop, it hasnt been bent, but I still cannot get it to take any real power with its jumping suddenly around the cassette.

Completely stumped!!!

Help

please

As above, or maybe the mech is straight but your hanger is slightly out of line?

Does it happen all across the cassette or just top or bottom?

Chainring especially if you're running 1X.

As above. Also, chain routed correctly through mech?

sorry numpty question but why would a worn chain ring cause it to jump on the cassette? Chain might be too long but dont think so

yes def 9 speed chain, checked box several times, and changed to a different new chain to make sure, but thats exactly what its like, like its the wrong chain for the cassette

check mech hanger is tight, is there play in the freehub, is the rear axle broken?

Yep chainring as above. Had that before, felt like the chain was skipping on the cassette but it was actually skipping on the chainring.

It will be the front chain ring. I had this recently when I borrowed a newer chain from another bike. It feels like its slipping on the cassette, but its slipping at the front. Same reason as new chain will slip on old cassette, just the front chainring is more tolerant of wear

I had this issue recently. I changed front chainring, cassette, chain with no difference. It turned out my freehub was failing and would occasionally slip then catch again. It was driving me crazy and I didn't work out what was happening until it got worse and my pedals would spin with no resistance. I'm a little slow though so this might've been really obvious to others ๐Ÿ™‚

As above, how do you know the chain is skipping on the cassette rather than the front ring ?

Hooray, collective pat on the back for you guys! ๐Ÿ˜€ Put it into the middle chain ring and rode round the garden and watched closely, right enough its the chain ring! I never even thought to look there just assumed it was the cassette, D'oh!

Thanks very much guys, I only spent two hours trying to figure it out

Chainring
Could be freehub if it was skipping before you started replacing stuff but since you said your replacement was due to slop......

Chainring
