Can I use a Shimano olive in my TRP Slate Evo?

They are new and came with the insert fitted but not connected as they have a small hex cap which is super practical. Except that Sport & Leisure didn't include the olive or it was lost at the warehouse, the OE bag is somewhat loosely closed...

Anyway, sourcing the TRP 5mm olive is difficult so which Shimano olive will work if any?

I'm 97.5692% certain that the answer is yes.

Having a set of TRP's on my Ragley I seem to think they were the same when I fitted mine

Leisure Lakes, Westbrook, Merlin all seem to have stock of Tektro olives/barbs in any case

Are you sure the olive isn’t in the lever like a Shimano item?

  • I don't think shimano fit. There are also two sizes of olives for trp brakes

I had some trouble with Shimano/TRP compatibility recently but can't remember exactly which part was which. All I know is that an olive was a tiny bit too small for the hose so if you can get the proper part you'll avoid issues. IIRC the olives are different

My money is still on it being in position, ready in the lever under the blanking plug. Have you looked yet @nickfrog ?

Thanks all. No I didn't look as the last ones I bought from Merlin came in a box with the olive in the box in a bag. Chances of me losing loads of fluid while checking?

Edit just checked, not there, not sure it would fit

Thing is Merlin, LL and Westbrook only sell the 5.5mm olive (brass) and I need the 5mm grey one (the one that takes a hex plug).

I'll try and convince Sport and Leisure to send me the missing olive. If they can't then I'll return the lot and find another solution. A bit tired of this industry being by and large shit tbh.

Thank you. If you mean the black plastic threaded insert that goes in instead of the threaded connecting bolt for transport, there just isn't any space for an olive there anyway. I checked twice now, it's not there.

I have sourced x4 TRP olive+connector for £7 landed so not too bad as I'll probably use them in future as I already have those brakes on another bike.

Could just try it? i was in a bind few weeks ago short for time, sram db8 lever broke, stuck a trp slate evo lever (both mineral oil) straight on, didn't change the wrong olive and it sealed fine.

As a side note TRP lever - sram db8 hose and caliper feels spot on not going to bother swapped the rest over.

Good to hear. I actually have one of those SRAM red olives... I might try that if the Tektro ones take too long...
