I have found that the Ridgeback is now out of production but there should be a 2010 variation available in the spring, spec not yet confirmed but cost likely to be closer to £600.
I can stretch the budget up to £600 or at a push £700, which brings in the Cannondale Bad Boy :

at the top of my scale, but I could also go for something like a basic Rockhopper or Genesis Core 10, both of which have a similar spec to the 'Dale, albeit with cheapo suspension fork which I really don't need.
