Buying a new chains...

[Closed] Buying a new chainset for an old bike - quick question

I have an old GT Arrowhead frame (that I bought off here ages ago) that I am looking to build up as a commuting/all-round bike. With that in mind I am looking to get a new chainset on there.

This is where my question comes in, I've not bought a chainset since my last square taper one - UN73 68-113mm - still in the frame (my last bike came with a hollowtech chainset that I never took off). I need to remove the square taper BB that's in there and replace the lot.

Would something like the Truvativ Stylo 3.3 GXP & Rings or the Shimano XT Chainset 9 Speed M770 fit into an old frame or are the sizings totally different now?

I'm looking at those two as they seem to come with a BB, and I have a £50 voucher for CRC.

Thanks in advance for your help.

You shouldn't have any issues fitting a Hollowtech II chainset like the XT one.

Thanks for such a quick response Mister P.

Would the same be said for the Truvativ chainset? I ask as it's £20 cheaper, and looks quite nice. 🙂

If you're fitting a BB with external bearings you may need to get the BB shell in the frame properly faced. Bike shop should do this for you for not much money... probably do it free if you buy the chainset from them.

£20 saving on Truvativ will probably be spent many times over on replacement GXP bottom brackets.

That's a very good point, and one I'm glad I read before I placed any orders.

Hollowtech II it is then, thanks for all your advice.
