Hi all,
I have play in the bottom bracket, which is only 3 months old. The play seems to be on the chainring side. When I look at it, I'm sure the play is not in the bearing, but the crank axle seems to be moving within the BB. It looks like the bearings are solid and the axle is moving where once it fitted snugly. The bolt is tightened right up and I'e used loctight.
This is really annoying and I just don't understand why there is play there...
Can anyone help?
Thanks all,
Cashy
If the bearing is seized then theres bound to be wear on the axle. The outside diameter of the axle will be reduced due to it turning against a static inner race of the bearing.
Is this a Shimano Hollowtech 2 crank?
You "might" be lucky, you may have only worn down the nylon top cap spacer that sits between the axle & bearing.
The axle itself may still be intact. Cant comment on Truvativ cranks.
You havent been over zealous with muc off in the BB area have you?
What type of BB?
It's not by any chance a loose spider on the drive side crank instead?
Thanks guys,
really appreciate your help:
Its a truvative firex gxp crank.
I don't use muck off.
I can't see wear on the axle.
The spider is not loose.
Your suggestions are really helpful though, if you have any more I'd love to hear them.
Thanks
Cashy
Quite common for the bearing to be shot on a GXP BB after that length of time, not particularly durable i'm afraid.
