Apparently a bit of illegal trail building has been going on in the woods. The legit builders of trails there and at Witton are worried that this could jeopardise all their hard work and good relations with the land owners and Council. Rather than coming over all heavy handed they would like to get the people responsible to work together to create something that everybody is happy with. These guys have worked with Gisburn Forest, Lee Quarry, Cycle Junkies and Healey Nab to name but a few so they know their onions. They want to harness the enthusiasm and skills of the illegal builders. Anybody concerned/interested please contact blackburnbikers@gmail.com
good idea though its probably a load of kids that don't use STW!
Aye, they are also posting in local bike shops and on the trails themselves.
Hmm..never been up there, even though it's only a mile from my house. May have a look sometime.
What he^ said
It'll maybe get worse in the school hols aswell. Your best course of action might be to put notices up where they are building, asking them to contact you.
Er, as I said they are doing that!
if it was me i would out signs to warn them and ask the m to contact you

I would then hope they can read better than STW.
Local MTB club based at the college put up some posters there/spread the word to the Yoof?
Have a look on YouTube and the like for footage taken on these trails?
junkyard, when I read the thread, that hadn't been posted
Guns Guns Guns!!!
What about digging an elephant trap?
Wow, didnt know these existed! i only work 3 miles away - i could nip for a few laps on my way home and the fun police would never know!
so, are they any good??
Billinge is worth a visit if you're only three miles away. You'll need to Ride from Tower Road area or similar (right at the bottom of the park) and add in plenty of cheeky footpaths to make even a short ride out of it though, 'cos the built trails are VERY short. Only a few hundred yards long. Some of the steppy footpaths are arguably more fun than the official trails anyway
I did notice a few makeshift jumps appearing alongside the trails when up there one night. I guess this might be what the OP is refering to, rather than whole new trails being cut through the woods.
Every credit to the guys involved for building the original trails but I can kinda see why the local kids might see fit to add in a few features to make things more interesting. There's only one small proper rock feature on the trails and the rest is all gravelly tracks and lumps & bumps.
Worth a visit if you're local but not worth travelling to IMHO.
Interested to know if there are any plans to expand/extend the trails though.
Been up Billinge today and noticed some new signage, with a list of complaints about riders and 'illegal' trail building. A quick Google search has brought me here.
The complaints say something about a rider almost killing a walker and his dog, another about someone riding the trails and almost falling off a cliff and another complaint about a rider urinating in full view of a walker.
The reality of this 'illegal' building is two kickers, about a foot high each, slightly off the main track. Easily avoided and quite rubbish to be honest.
There is a pre existing drop off hidden towards the end of one of the tracks that has been there since about 2003, which was sign posted years back, but I doubt this could be included as recent illegal building.
These woods seem to attract the worst of Blackburn's general public, the amount of idiots dragging children and dogs up and down the cycle track is unreal, I have been verbally abused on several occasions by walkers. However, strangely enough, I've never witnessed a cyclist randomly gobbing off at other users of the hill?
Does anyone have an email address that I, as a rider, can contact the local council to complain about the other users of Billinge Woods?
I'd like to contact the council and complain about dog walkers leaving their animal's excrement all over the hill, abusive walkers, illegal fires being set, groups of low lives drinking, naked sunbathers, groups of Asian youths smoking illegal substances, chavs driving motorised vehicles on the cycle tracks and in the general areas. Christ it wasn't too long ago the area was a hotbed for dogging and other lewd behaviour.
Some kids build two kickers though and the poo hits the fan!? Anti social behaviour at its worst!
You can contact the council via us at blackburnbikers@gmail.com to complain about the other stuff....we attend the cycling stategy group with the council....BUT we'd rather be positive and look at ways of improving the trail WITH the council.
They built the original trails in consultation with us. They are professionally designed which means that there is no comeback if someone falls off...the onus is back with the rider. The 'illegal' sections bugger all that up.
The council are seeking to get substantial funding to develop Witton Park with Billinge Woods as a cycle centre. These trails are just the start...a taster.
So we need everyone positive and feeding in exciting ideas. www.blackburnbikers.co.uk
