I have finally taken the plunge and bought the FS I have been long planning.I saw the weight quoted on one web site as 26.3lb but when I got it home and weighed it I made it 27.9 lbs. Not a great difference I know but when weight was a criteria in choosing a bike it is misleading. The weight was quoted in a different shop from where I bought the bike and I don't know whether it was manufacturers or just the shop estimate so no real grounds for a moan but just make sure you get a chance to heft the bike about a bit before you buy if weight matters to you.

do claimed weights still exclude pedals and any extras (reflectors etc.)?

28lb is bloody light for a full sus, what is it?

What size bike was the claimed bike for often they weigh a small or a medium.

Condom thin inner tubes, tyres that would rupture at the mere sight of a stone, no pedals, small frame size. They all play this numbers game. Look at the small print: "In the interests of continuous product improvement specification may change without notice" Guess whether your bike differs from the specification that was weighed for publication in some small ways. 😉

Its called marketing. Same with cars and mpg or 0-60 times. All rubish.

With motorcycles they weigh them with no petrol, oil or water in. In the real world none weigh the same as the advert / spec.

One motorcycle mag tired telling it like it was and Yamaha told them they would never get a test bike from them again. They published Yamahas letter to piss them off.

Trimix With motorbikes they always quote the dry weight which as you say doesn't include petrol, coolant and oil. It also doesn't include brake fluid, battery acid and any grease.

My old VFR had a quoted dry weight of 197kg and had a wet weight of 222kg. Being able to say it's below 200kg is a good sales pitch

another sneaky way is to weigh a sample of 100 items, then choose the lightest 10 specimens - average them and call it an averaged weight.

and believe me this happens.

my motorbike weighs loads but it still climbs faster and descends faster than my marin

Normally quoted without pedals which on average adds nearly a pound!

Its not just manufacturers, some of the weights I've seen people claim for their bikes on here take some believing.

It's always heavier than you think. Mind you it's how it rides that counts ateotd. Two or three pounds here or there will make little difference.

Agree with Dibbs - some of the claims on here seem somewhat leightweight.

I ignore manufacturers weights. Test data in mags seems more reliable.

I have no idea what my last three bikes weighed - Sub5=acceptable. Niner EMD=whoah, that's light and ST4=lighter than the Sub5, but not the Niner.

Maybe he didn't spend £3k on it and most weekends licking the BB clean, like some seem to be on here 😉 ?

Never buy scales, it only ends in disappointment.

Orange Five Pro was quoted as 28lbs in MBR - just weighed mine at 29.75!! Ok, that 28lb is probably sans pedals, I've got the bash, my Kendas are a fair bit heavier than the Mountain Kings it comes with (extra weight is worth the performance increase IMO) and I've got some heavy Conti 2.1 - 2.5 tubes which I really don't need adding too much weight. The Holzfeller stem and bar probably isn't doing it any favours either. Then of course the review bike was sporting the performance pack (Thomson bits and Fizik Gobi). 🙄

My Genesis iO is quoted as 24lb - it's 25lb.

I thought my Cervelo would be about 18-19lb but is a more portly 20lb!!

The only honest one was my Wife's Myka FSR, a claimed 29lb and weighed 29lb...

Yes I chuckled at Matt's comment.

I've got a 21lb FS, but mine gets ridden lots. Although agreeing with Offroading I certainly don't think 28 is anything special, most half decent 5" trail bikes come in under that!

As said though, manufacturers use small, sometimes unpainted, bikes, no pedals etc. It rather undermines the whole point of actually printing weights!

Do they really ?
Any examples / evidence to back that up as I'm suprised if that is the norm in the 'real world' e.g not a small, with pedals, with shock etc...I'm sure when I used to flick through MBR (!) they were often quoted as more than this. I know many XTR clad weight wheenie bikes may be less than 28 but "most" ?

I have a double butted Ti HT with reba WC's, carbon bits Inc SDG carbon post & FX saddle, 350g tyres, Ti BB, Ti freehub, egg beaters etc, my scales say 22lb & I'm happy with that.

True they do exist...although I'm seeing quotes of around 24lb in reality for the SL (i.e. Super Light) at £4K plus this is much more much than half-decent trial bike money in my book...more like super-bike money to me.
How about £2k (okay £2.5k) for a off the shelf complete bike...doesn't that buy you a half-decent 5 inch trial bike these days ...are most (any!) of these in reality under 28lbs ?
I've not weighed my bikee (Nicolai Helius CC / Mostly XT, Thomson... ) but I'd be suprised if it was much, if at all, under 28lbs...probably not a half-decent bike though!?

Interesting this. My hooligan HT, an Inbred, is an 18", with 160mm Nixon Elites, RF stem, X-Lite carbon bars, I-Beam saddle/post, Hope hubs with Mavic X3.1 UST rims and Bonty Jones ACX 2.35 tubless, Hope M4 Monos, RF ISIS Turbine double-and-bash with SRAM X9 front and rear. Pretty good spec, has lasted six years on two frames, and was recently weighed with digital scales at 30.2lb, which is a good weight for a burly all-day bike.

and then my old (99) heckler as weighed on the topeak scales at the selkirk merida event 2 years ago at 26.5 lbs with mostly 08 sids, XTR drive train / middleburn duo chainset with ti bb , XT brakes , hope x717s , Ti skewars and seat clamp , Carbon bars , ea 70 seat pin , flite ti saddle, 1.95 kenda SB8s.(was less in my silly phase of ultralite tubes and tires that were shit and punctured all the time) Except the frames flexyness(which you didnt notice when riding it) it rode well for an all day trail bike .

didnt hold me back anyway. and owed me less than 1000 quid to build due to second hand market forces. weighed 31lbs when i got rid of it at the end of last year as i was saving for NZ and replaced most of the bling with heavier stuff that would last a summers riding without needing replaced. Kept the good unworn stuff for my new bike, will be some difference jumping on a 22/23lb carbon ht from the heckler

i wouldnt doubt NJEE20s scales thats for sure probably some of the more accurate scales on here....

A Stumpjumper Elite is c27lbs with pedals and stuff. Alu frame, bog standard bits.

A stock spec SC Superlight (which they're not!) is also sub 27 for £2000. Fuel Exs come out about the same.

My Zesty 914 in large, XTR, R1'S and crossmax slr's comes in at 25.6 lbs with pedals and I'm happy with what my scales say!

I wouldnt mind borrowing NJEE20s scales my Turner XCL will certainly weigh less with them

Actually if anything my scales over weigh things IME, everyone who's bike I've weighed has usually been disappointed!

I don't really see why it's so hard to believe, I've never seen a bike within a pound of a manufacturers claimed weight, Scott's are usually 1-1.5lbs over. But really, a £2000 XC biased trail bike should be under 28lbs. Going back 10 years that got you an S-Works FSR which weighed substantially less, and things have moved on a fair chunk!
