Did four new tyres for at the weekend for our next trip. All the valves were free so just spayed them again. One had a slight bend from  the pump attachment but still screwed in OK. Straightened it up with some plyers and fitted it back. Spray of silicone has always worked for us and we do have a few bikes.

We only use Stans sealant.

Not going to mess drilling carbon rims when we dont have a problem with the valves.

yeah I'm not even going to mess about with alloy rims just to get different valves I'm sure sharader would be better but the inconvenience that presta causes is so small that I'm not messing on.

Freewheels! Why are there so many variations of somethings that do the same job? You can’t walk into an lbs and get a replacement, you have to research on line and discover the manufacturer stopped making them. However I do realise that STWers will just get a new wheelset.

Back in the day I had set of Marzocchi Marathon SL forks.

The lockout locked then in the 'down' position, lowering the front of the bike by around four ages. It was brilliant! Why does no one make forks which do that nowadays?

careful, thinking like this is what gets people stuck with rim braked, quick release wheeled hardtails with 3x7 gears

any improvement is always a deviation from the norm.

Sorry but I still think disc brakes could be improved, I think someone mentioned a page or so back about improved pad clearances although I guess that changes the feel as well unless you implement some sort of servo wave type mechanism.

But also for gravel road and CX (less so for MTBers or anyone who descends and brakes a lot) it seems manufacturers have just washed their hands of screeching and squealing brakes in cold wet conditions, and I've watched enough professional CX and road racing on TV to know that even pro mechanics can't get it right.

Maybe more shops just need to buy those motorised brake bedder-inners, as it seems that you need to do significantly more braking than just 20 hard stops to get the disc surface properly burnished (I remember a blog article by a Canyon mechanic saying something along the lines of brakes not being properly bedded in until 300km or something, but one person's 300km in the Alps is not the same as my 300km on flat winter gravel tracks 🙄).

I may have said this before (maybe even in this thread). But I'd like to see more powerful 2 piston brakes. Unfortunately the world buys 4 pistons because 4>2.

Power comes from the piston area. But friction (and subsequently, all the issues of pistons sticking, uneven movement etc) comes from the piston perimeter.

Larger pisitons, and a correspondingly wider brake track on the disc removes or reduces these issues. 

Slight increase in disc weight and decrease in caliper weight. Added disc weight also helps with cooling.

Creaking csus in the first post, amen brother. It's pretty much outrageous that it still happens, when 3rd parties can fix it with pretty much 100% success. It's easier for the factory to do it right than it is for Jtech or whoever to fix it, and yet they don't. It's not "can't", it's "can't be bothered" and on bloody expensive forks. ****housery.

Re bleed nipples, disagree but it's got to be part of a good system. My formulas have the little removable grub screws but the advantage is, the syringes screw in solidly and will never leak, even if you're applying a decent amount of pressure/suction or moving the bike around. Bleed nipples can't match that, and it makes every bleed simple and reliable. Push/pull bleeding with syringes is the best and bolt-in does it best.

Exactly. If you increase pad clearance, you need a longer bite point. You can fix that with progressive rate levers, but that's expensive and complicated and is very sensitive to bleeding.

Yet F1 teams, which will spend millions to save a kg in weight, use 6 piston brake calipers.

Maybe forced by the space they have to work with?  Regardless, ain't no way I wish to maintain six pot calipers.  I don't have an F1 service budget

Could it be that larger diameter pistons are less good at moving concentrically though?

Yet almost every car on the road has a single piston not even an opposing pair.

Maybe forced by the space they have to work with?  Regardless, ain't no way I wish to maintain six pot calipers.  I don't have an F1 service budget

There's also IIRC heat dissipation issues. At a point you need more pad area to dissipate heat, which is why for example car brakes have single piston calipers but 2x large pads rather than two small opposing pistons and 2x small pads. 6-pots give you all the area you need, and concentrate it further out.  

MTB brakes don't have that issue, we talk about them getting hot, but they're never HOT.  They're just hot in the context of something that weighs barely anything and so struggles to absorb much energy.

They should be significantly better, because whatever tolerance you specify between the piston and the caliper bore, it's proportionally a lot smaller relative to a bigger caliper.  Servicing motorbike calipers is a breeze compared to push bikes, the pistons just pull straight out and push back in again.  Although they also have the benefit of primary and secondary seals.
