Bike storage in a garage

I could do with sorting out how I store my 4 bikes, I know there was another thread about DIY solutions but I struggle to assemble IKEA furniture so want a ready made solution. These look surprisingly cheap to me (even adding VAT), am I missing something? I'm also assuming delivery and installation will at least double the price but still it seems pretty reasonable.

Has anyone installed one (or similar)? I'll need to measure up, especially the height, but otherwise it seems a decent solution to stick in the corner of a garage https://thebikestoragecompany.co.uk/product/gas-assisted-two-tier-cycle-rack/ I think I'd prefer it vs 4 bikes hanging vertically.

I guess it depends what else you need to store in the garage, but that seems complicated. We've got 8 bikes in our single garage, just leaning against each other seperated by cardboard and old curtains, takes up less than half the floorspace.

You haven't selected the option for 4 bikes, which increases the price to well over £400

Yeah I played around with loads of options, and in the end the most efficient was actually just to lean the bikes against each other.

The only pain is when you want the bike at the back - but this is rare 🙂

Mine says well over £500. Seems like the bikes would take up too much space. Be fine for a double garage I guess.

Yeah was looking at the £560 4-bike option, OK not exactly cheap but for something that looks pretty substantial it seems reasonable

I'm really happy with steadyrack racks.  I've got them pretty close together to maximise storage density with a staggered layout and just need hinge adjacent bikes a little to make enough gap to squeeze a frame between bar ends.

I've been through various options over the years. I've settled on 4 of these. Easy to move about the garage if I need to change the layout, also used when cleaning. I've found them much more useful than hanging.

I have 4 bikes hanging vertically in the garage and even that annoys me with how much floor space they take up. Having them horizontal robs a lot of space.

£560 vs £40 for 2 of these and space saved?

Assuming you are putting these on the end (narrow wall)?

Looking at the dimensions it pretty much wipes 1/4 of a single garage.

Also what's the maximum wheelbase/length it can take?

Overall length is only 2025mm - the wheelbase on my medium 29'er Enduro bike is 1220mm, add the extra for the wheels with a 2.4 tyre and you're at a total length of around 2000mm.

4 bike version is £672 including VAT when you add it to the basket.

These were £4.95 when I bought them, but even at a tenner they're a pretty cheap option https://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-storage-solutions/mottez-bike-pedal-wall-mount-357613.html

Double-decker here.

One leaning horizontally on the floor against a wall, two above hung horizontally from rope loops on the joists

Have you got enough height in your garage, @FuzzyWuzzy? Looking at the spec' for those 2-tier racks I'd say you need at least 2.5m with a bike on the upper level.

I do like the look of that but even though it says the Pro version works with mudguards I'm not convinced it would with full length (with extension flaps) close fitting ones I have on two of the bikes (at least over winter).

Yeah it would take up a fair chunk of the garage but then that area is already effectively a dead space with access part blocked by bikes and other crap. I would be concerned about being able to leave enough clear space in front of the racking though as otherwise it would be pointless. Wheelbase is a concern but my biggest bike should be OK on the dimensions they give and no plans for any bigger bikes.

Those look like a total bargain!

You can also get something that looks like a Steadyrack for £35....

We just got some from Amazon and bolted them to the wall. They are mounted vertically to use up less floor space

I recently splurged (Happy Christmas me) on the Stashed storage rail for 8 bikes - it's a super bit of kit, very easy to set up if you've got rafters to screw it into.

If you've got wall space, the pedal hangers like onewheelgood linked are great. The bikes up on the wall take up no floor space.

Also have  steadyracks and allows me to have 7 bikes in a reasonably tight space. I have one of the proflex version for my commuter with full length front mudguard. Works fine (I rest the mudguard on the steadyrack. This might not work with a very heavy bike as the weight might damage the mudguard.

I twist the bars to 90 degrees on less used bikes and remove pedals from all bar the commuter bike (twice weekly use) which allows to swing even closer together and to the wall.

Tried various solutions over the year but these are significantly better than anything else, though admittedly quite spendy.

Looks rather space hungry as well as 'you could buy a bike for that'.

I use alternating wall hooks and shop floor display stands. The lesser used bikes are hung (mostly 26" as the back of my shed is low) and the heavier and more frequently used are on the floor. Gives more space for the bars than having them all the same.

The Steadyrack range is different to when I bought ours, but the current 'Pro' racks look near-identical to the old-model 'Fender' racks I have. This is my old-style Fender rack holding a 29x2.2 RaceKing with 2.5" PDWs and extension flap. No issues. Works just as well with narrower tyres and SKS guards.

Steadyracks were cheaper back when I bought, but they really are great.

Another vertical hanger of bikes here, hooks are cheap and you generally halve the space claim of a bike by hanging it from a wheel, that racking is for Train stations not home Garages…

Steady racks all the way. Had them for years.  You might have to tweak around to get bikes to fit but they really are great and worth the money.

I always feel it's a bit odd to be looking for the cheapest option for bike hanging solutions when you're probably putting a few thousand pounds of kit on a wall.

I went through the same process and found the SR to be the most flexible and kind to the bike because of the way it holds the tyre.

Well worth the money.

I’m a DIY doofus and the homebrew sliding hook rack from the other thread is one of the easiest things I’ve ever done. Screw a bit of metal to the ceiling then roll the hooks in.

It may or may not be the right solution for your space but the installation is certainly the same level of difficulty as any of the other options on this thread.

What are you all doing for security? My bikes are on the floor so I can use ground anchors and chains.

Been hanging bikes vertically by the front wheels for 20+ years using Decathlon wheel hooks. Cheap, easily accessible and sturdy.

7 on the back wall and others slotted in between.

Bikes are secured to ground anchors and then behind a security shutter.

Decent chain and padlock to a wall-mounted ground anchor, one per bike. Just visible in bottom-right of my pic a few posts up.

My understanding is having the anchor wall-mounted with chains draped across to bikes makes it harder/slower to cut the chain. Plus one per bike just to be awkward!

Decent garage door and low-crime neighbourhood

Currently I've just a chain through them all. I've got a nice big eyelet and epoxy on the way, and an SDS drill...

Plus tucked out the way and hidden from sight when garage door is open.

Hooks on the cross beams, staggered, then top and tailed. I wrap the hooks in old inner tube for some extra protection. The wheel rests can’t take bikes with mudguards. The recumbent trike is on the floor. The TT trike also hangs from a hook.
