Yet again I find myself borderline between bike sizes. If I'm trying to adjust sizing what is the best route to go - smaller frame plus layback post and longer stem, or larger frame and shrink to fit? a sort of on the bike or in the bike question.

depends on the manufacturer .....
there was a good article on this in one of the mags last year ... basically depends what size the bike is designed around before it is up/down sized
