Unfortunately i have joined the ever growing number of STW users that have been made redundant...
Decided on a change of career over 2 years ago... went back to uni did an Msc... became a Geotechnical Engineer.. got made redundant... can't win.
Looking for any work really but thought as i am likely to have to take a massive pay cut i may aswell try and get a job doing something i enjoy.
Anybody work in a bike or outdoor shop in the North East and need staff??
Dont know about Newcastle specifically, but Halfords always seem to be looking for bike savvy people. It may "only" be Halfords but it's a start.
Thanks..
Worked for them 10 years ago and it was okay.. will take a look locally.. always prefer an independent though or more specialist
Not quite a bike shop job but if you're in the Toon our place has got a contract job going as an Environmental Specialist. Not sure what experience you have but some of it may be applicable as a geotech engineer. The deadline's 21st September. Not sure what the responses have been like so far.

Cheers... that looks like a perfect job... not sure if they will consider my Geotech credentials as suitable but i do have a Bsc in Natural Environmnetal Science which may help.
Apply in writing.. best find a printer to get CV done.
Do work in the same department??
I work in our Power Station and the advertised role is based in the Smelter. If you're applying I'll leave it at that. Not a bad place to work at all...
... but I will warn you that the Manager that the role reports to is a roadie!
The personnel manager is my neighbour!
midgebait, do you know Karl Johnson?
edinburgh bike always seam to be after staff.
with pinches (Hi Pinches!) - try Edinburgh Cycles. I work there part time (when my leg isn't broken) and if they ain't looking for staff now its still worth putting yourself up as students come and go a lot. If you have good bike knowledge across the board you're in with a good chance.
More posts than i thought i would get...
Will apply for Alcan job... anyway i can email my CV and try and get on it or am i stuck with normal routes of application??
Swalsey, Who is best to speak to at Edinburgh??
thanks to all... was feeling pretty crap today and seems like there is work out there.
try Edinburgh Cycles. ... If you have good bike knowledge across the board you're in with a good chance.
Thats weird cause the majority of staff in Edinburgh bike seem to know sweet FA about bikes.
Dentons just closed down but is about to re-open as wildtraks (now owned by the outdoor shop wildtraks), could be worth giving them a try.
Yes it would Gordon!!!!!
If you dont mind travelling try Purple Mountain in Kielder. Long way to commute though. But sure bloke who owns or works at bird of prey centre there travells from Ryton, so can be done.
i got turned away for edinburgh bikes .... seems that if you know about bikes they dont want you ....
dont worry trail-rat they do the same to the customers! ๐
dont worry i joined a better company anyway ๐ so have no reason to go back there
ooh pray tell trail_rat?
im not in newcastle sorry - was a different edy bikes i applied for a job with !
Thanks all..
Wildtrak/Denton thing sounds promising too... i remember the old Denton cycles when it used to be good.
Anymore ideas??
paul78, it's worth phoning the HR Dept. I suspect they'll accept an electronic CV and covering letter given the approaching deadline. Good luck with the app.
I45key, I know a Carl Johnson at the site but only in passing. If you know the personnel manager I'm just having a coffee break ๐
I think Purple Mountain will need security staff rather than sales/service after the latest visit from thieving scum last weekend. As well as Purple Mountain in Kielder there's Ian Bell at the Bike Place (Newcastle/ Kielder) but I'm not sure whether he needs any staff at the moment. Not sure I'd want to do the hour drive from Newcastle to Kielder everyday mind.
Just spoke to someone at Wildtrak and they confirmed that they have bought Denton.
Anybody know owner of wildtrak or staff there can get me more info?? Will drop a cv into shop but just want to be a little more pro active:)
