It's important to keep your bike as clean as possible by riding through any water you come across on a ride:

Don't worry about it rusting, mountain bikes are made of aluminium or tightanium for the less well off.
At the end of the ride, only total immersion will do:

LMFAO. ๐Ÿ™‚

Every time I see any of your pics they always involve childish grins, big splashes & bikes in various stages of water submersion. I think the second one is the most submersion so far.

Effing ace.

The second one looks like the 3 mile "loop of death" on the Kielder 100.

don't see the point

๐Ÿ™„

Lots of people wouldn't see the point of riding a bike in a circle for no practical purpose.

Maybe it's fun? Remember that?

don't see the point

that's OK, you don't have to do it. Obviously it must be entertaining enough for those taking part to get very wet and risk total immersion, or they wouldn't do it ๐Ÿ™‚

"and we'll have fun fun fun 'til the water takes my bearings away...."

either this is aprocryphal, or people just replace the parts involved without stressing over what causes them to wear out :o)

People seem to make a lot of fuss about bearing wear, as if they were somehow sacred. We ride bikes for fun. I would much prefer the bike to work perfectly for N years and then one day just be a pile of scrap metal, but in practice bike bits wear out all the time and need to be replaced. I find wheel bearings last me 6-9 months and then I have to spend perhaps 20 or 30 minutes replacing them, and square taper BBs last one or 2 years, taking about the same time to replace, so I wouldn't change my riding style to give slightly longer service intervals...

I'd just point out that most STW rides have more riders than were on that event ๐Ÿ™‚

Excellent. Love the total immersion one. Although I am shivering slightly just looking at it. I can keep warm and have fun until I get waterlogged, after which the fun starts to die. ๐Ÿ™‚

i can see the fun in riding through a river that deep in the middle of summer but not in fridgid waters in december. is it a competition to see if you can find your willy after immersing it in freezing streams/flood waters?
thats what i don't see the point of.

but it doesn't matter what you think - you weren't there! The first rider of the deeps specifically asked if we could go that way after I'd planned a route avoiding the ford - so he must have decided it would be fun, and his face shows that he was loving it. People have differing motivations and you don't need to understand them.

I decided not to ride the ford, though I was already stood up to my knees in the water for 5 minutes taking the photos, but in retrospect I wish I had ๐Ÿ™‚

"don't see the point"

I think the point is they are being photographed.

TBH they seem to take so many photos I don't know how they have any time for a decent ride. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

I think the point is they are being photographed.

I think that may add to the fun, as they know they'll have a permanent record to laugh about later - but it's really idle speculation, as unless I break my camera and no one has a spare I will always take lots of photos on a ride

TBH they seem to take so many photos I don't know how they have any time for a decent ride

and yet in all the years I've been doing this I've only had one person complain, and he was so unfeasibly fit he always had to wait around for the rest of us anyway. The way it works is that poeple just do the ride as normal, and I take photos as they do it. Occasionally I'll ask them to wait one minute while I get in position, but that just lets the stragglers catch up. If you look at the expressions on their faces you'll see that they're not bored with having to wait around :o)

Nothing good ever comes from getting wet. Your bikes will die, you'll get arthritis, all the fish will die, the plants will die, the planet will warm up and get wetter. And all because of the bogtrotters.

I probably wouldn't get in the shower if the wife didn't make me. Getting wet makes me cold and doubles my weight...

I seem to recall reasonable enjoyment of getting parts of me wet. Bikes certainly wear, but I can't tell how much difference the water makes. As for arthritis, is there any evidence for that ? I've been doing this for 13 years now, and apart from a few stiff fingers caused by blunt trauma I'm still very bendy ๐Ÿ™‚

are you this traildog

No, me neither, but last week I had a hasty dismount that involved me running through a knee deep puddle (rather than falling into it if I crashed) and we all had a laugh about it. ๐Ÿ˜€
Like SFB says, you don't HAVE to do it, and all can laugh at the eejits that do. Everyone's a winnah!!

As the total immersion rider in pic 1 I can catergorically state that all parts of my bike & myself are still in perfect working order, just as they were after the Langdale dunking of a few weeks ago. However, thank you once again for your concerns, it really is warming to know how much you lot care about other people's bikes. The 'frigid waters of Decmeber' were not that cold believe me, or maybe it's just that I'm made from Northern Grit.

This Mountain Bike malarky, it's all about having fun in your leisure time & I certainly do that whatever the weather & conditons when I ride & so do my mates. As do my children when they see their Daddy getting down & dirty again in SFB's excellent shots.

Get your bikes out, get a yourself some decent winter kit & go put a smile on your faces instead of sitting in front of a laptop dissing those who actually enjoy riding their bikes all year round.

it's almost paradoxical that we take riding seriously yet spent so much time doing daft stuff :o) I love it!

And what makes you think we don't ride our bikes all year round. Just because we don't take pictures of ourselves week in week out doesn't mean we are not out riding.
