36T is the largest specified by Shimano but they're notoriously conservative in that regard. I assume you're running 1x, in which case you've a theoretical range of 43T, and 11-42 is only a 31T range. Based on my experience, I'd certainly give it a go, though you might have to fiddle with the B-screw a bit.

It'll depend on the distance between the mech hanger and the drop out. My old ht was fine with a 42T cassette but my wife's needed a hanger extender.

Shimano made a 10 speed 11-42 (from memory,), so it must work on some mechs

You will need an SG length rear derailleur in this case, the longer cage SGS won’t clear the large cassette ring.

I couldn’t get it to work when I tried with an SGS, but a roadlink or extender might do the trick.

I've just replaced an xt rear mech with a deore 5120 rear mech on 10 speed with a 46t cassette.

I was previously running 42t and although it worked it would grumble.

The 5120 mech works flawlessly, shifting is crisp and it doesn't grumble in 1st.

But you need the 5120, I don't think the other series are as good or go as high as 46t. Other 11 speed mech may work.

Deore 5120 rear mech:

Number of speeds: 10 or 11
Long cage
Max teeth on the small cog: 11 T
Max teeth on the large cog: 46 T
Min teeth on the large cog: 42 teeth
Min teeth on the small cog: 11T
Max front difference: 10 T
Total capacity: 41 T
Number of teeth on jockey wheels: 11 T

Deore 6100 10 speed

Capacity: 41T (Medium GS version), 43 teeth (long SGS version) Maximum Large Sprocket: 42T

I bought mine from bike tart

O

If you are buying a new cassette you could buy a new rear mech and shifter

Deore M5100 rear mech is currently £15 on CRC/wiggle. That's fine up to 51t.

I managed to drag the M6000's predecessor an M615 across an 11-40 and for a brief while an 11-42, but it was a bit rough.

I've now got an M5100 operated by a zee 10 speed shifter across an 11-48 microshift cassette, it's a cajillion times better.

The trouble with most of the first and second gen dynasis mechs is the lack of top pulley offset, that makes a huge difference to how it gatheres up all the spare chain and clears the bigger diameter sprockets.

If they're still flogging them off for £15 on CRC grab an M5100, worry about what to match it with cassette and shifter wise later, I suspect once they're all gone, they won't be back at that price...

I tried an 11-42 cassetter with my RD-M615, no matter how I adjusted the b-tension the top jockey wheel clashed with the 42t sprocket. I fitted a £9.99 Sunrace extender link and it now works but the shifting is not as crisp as it was running 11-36.

I'd definitely go with the m5100 from CRC if you can still get one at £15. What you have may work with some fiddling but newer mechs are designed for big cassettes and have a totally different configuration
