Just wanted to publicly say a big thanks to HOPE for their excellent customer service.

While out on a ride in the Brecon Beacons I was riding up a fairly straightforward steep technical climb (nothing too severe but a bit of a challenge to clear). I got to a root and needed to put a little bit more in to get the back wheel over it - put some power down on the crank and there was a loud metallic crack... wasn't sure what had happened. checked the bike over and couldn't see anything so carried on after walking to the top. Then went down over a field and the bike didn't feel right - back end felt a bit loose and the tyre was rubbing on the chainstay. I stopped at the next gate and had a good look and found this.

I was gutted. Not just because I was 5 miles from the car with a descent I'd been looking forward to but because I couldn't see how I could afford a new one. I put some cable ties round the hub to stop it gettting any worse and carried on.

So, I walked up the next hill as everytime I tried to climb the wheel distorted and rubbed the chainstay. When I got to the top I found I could gently ride the bike if I kept my weight on the front and not the rear. Cue an interesting 5 minutes going down a hill slowly putting all my weight on my arms and trying to control the bike... After a serious case of arm pump I tried a new approach - putting all my weight on one side of the bike and that worked really well until I wanted to turn the other way! managed to get back to the car still with a smile on my face although disappointed my hub had failed in less that 3 yrs

I got back home and as you do, posted the picture on Facebook. I got a few comments saying to speak to Hope and did so. They said send it back so they could have look at it. So off it went. I was told 3 days to look at it but the next day (22hours after sending it) back comes my wheel rebuilt with a new hub and freehub all done with no charge!! I was so excited!

A mate told me that apparently a limited number of the early Pro2s had an issue with casting or something like this and a few have cracked in a similar way. Hence why Hope replaced it even though it was out of warranty.

Sorry for the waffle but thought I'd add a bit of background to my happiness of getting my hub replaced by the ever excellent HOPE

Amazin what decent custimer service does for a company that's products seem to fail commonly.

Commonly or lots of them out there to fail? Stats please 😉

Bet there are more Ford breakdowns than TVR ones but I know which are typically more reliable.

I had a out of warranty Hope hub crack at the spoke, called Hope and sent it back and they replaced it free of charge.

Had 6 x Hope hubs (3 different bikes), only had one failure and had the oldest hub for well over 10 years.

I think they make great hubs, have their fair share of issues BUT are very fair about replacing stuff even if it's old.

I had one do exactly the same and it was replaced under warranty, great customer service from hope but a bit of a shame you have to use it.
IIRC the later ones are now forged then machined to precent this rather than machined from plain billet.

In similiarly excellent customer service news, I went for a ride last night on a bike with Formula hubs and at no point did either of them break completely in half 😉
