i'm the first to admit - i'm a total luddite numpty, so haven't a clue about GPS (something to do with rays from space!)
what i'm after is a GPS unit that will work well abroad, possibly showing maps, easy to use, and long battery life and something that can be recharged easily
happily pay for quality
any suggestions?
Road Angel Adventurer 7000

Comes with British OS maps, but you'll have to buy the French and Spanish ones separately
Advantage: Displays real OS map, and shows your exact position on it. Brilliant in the dark, and wet/windy weather
You can do other stuff, like upload routes, but we don't usually bother
I think OS maps are more of a UK thing, could be wrong and the maps are really expensive. That Road Angel looks tied to Memory Map (MM) / OS so might not be the best for abroad.
I'm no expert but I've used Microsoft Autoroute Europe abroad no probs, it is the maps and compatible software that are the key not the GPS side of things (which is world wide).
If I were you I'd go for a PDA with built in GPS hardware that way you can install one or more types of software depending on maps. MM for UK and another for Europe etc.
