[Closed] Best biking guiding in Southern Spain

After this year's amazing trip with just ride Finale (highly recommended btw), we're already thinking about next year's destination.

While we will definitely be back in Finale with Louise and Co the year after next, we're thinking about Southern Spain next.

We went with ridesierranevada a long long time ago (2004 I think) and they were good but I was wondering whether anyone had any other recommendations.

We're more happy with cross country than downhill but do like an uplift while on holiday.

The likes of Morzine is OK but a bit boring to be honest. The trails at the top of Finale (down to the rollercoaster) are just about perfect. Think a natural version of the black cross country rote of your nearest trail centre and that would be about right. More singletrack than berms and drop offs.

So ... any thoughts?

Ridden with Ciclo in Spain and Morocco, both trips were excellent and at some point we'll be returning. Always seem to miss the female volley ball team though, BUT we are always the best riders he's had that week ๐Ÿ˜‰

Also ridden with Shaun @ Ride Sierra Nevada. Again, very good and worth a trip back

Ciclo Montana looks good.
What time of year ie is feb/March any good?
How much pedaling ie enduro rigs only or something more playful work too?

Think you can ride all year, but july/August can be pretty hot!
Best to mail and ask.

I've been end of April which is great weather but still a bit cold for the pool! And lots of snow at the top of the pass.
Also September which was warmer but not too hot.

I would recommend an enduro/all mountain bike as it's not all uplift. You need the uphills to work off the massive dinners you eat!

Used Dave at bikingandalucia.com twice now and booked up to go again in early December.. Orgiva is a lovely town and the riding is spot on.

Switchbacks are excellent, although when I went, my fitness, skills or Bike wasn't good enough. About 7 or 8 years ago now.

Wow. Cheers for all the responses. So ... biking Andalucia, Switchbacks and Ciclo Montana.

Any thoughts on Pure Mountains and/or Sierra MTB?

We went with Sierra, earlier this year as group of 8.

Accommodation and breakfast was okay and the owner and guides were decent enough chaps.

However, for me personally, the trails were just 'ok' rather than mind blowing. It depends on what you're after. Nothing particularly difficult (athough the '10%er' had couple of us on the ground!)

The day usually started about 10:30 and you're back for about 4ish. There's a fair amount of climbing expected too as the vans aren't used other than first thing to gain a bit of elevation.

I think my biggest issue was lack of trial knowledge form the guides. I appreciate there can be quite a high turn over of staff which makes it difficult for them to know everything, however there were marked trails at the top of the nearby cable car uplift they didn't know. I think we rode them on our day off before they had all season.

There wasn't much evidence of trail development or ownership either, with comments like "someone else can clear it" rather than seeing it as a benefit to them keeping a diverse network open and rideable.

Minor critisisms really but we had been spoilt at Riviera Bike in Itlay the year before, where the trails were better, less fire road pedalling uphill and great trail involvement.

Hmm. Sierra MTB doesn't sound too good then. Shame about that. We'll mebbes stick more to the companies in the National Park.

I remember Sierra got a scathing public critique on here a few years ago. The Sierra chap can on to defend himself, but I remember thinking at the time it was all a bit halfhearted damage limitation. I made a mental note to not take the risk.

Went with Ciclo Montana. Loved it. Tech trail riding, honest food in a communal environment, with fantastic hosts. Just be careful of the isotonic wine.

Don't get confused they are two completley different outfits!!

Sierra MTB - Based on the beach @ Fuengirola, Malaga.

Ride Sierra Nevada - Based in the lovely little village of Monachil, Granada, Andalucia.

Ride Sierra Nevada are the guys we rode with. Shaun is very good with routes, knowledge, the whole package really and Csilla makes a proper decent sandwich

Got to say, I'm, liking the look of Ciclo Montana for a trip next year..

Combined with the fact you can get cheap Ryan Air flights from Liverpool?

Could be a great trip.

So, What's the weather like in June? 8)

Ciclo...
Well established, know all the good stuff and importantly best cafe / tapas lunch spots.. fantastic hosts and food, isotonic wine and tales of the netball team. Great hosts, great trails and a great area. Marko always manages to make a bit of adventure and mystery to it all even though he's been there upteen times.

Granada nightride and the Holy Trail is well worth it.
Carlos bar for pizza just up the road.

Oh, and Dave "fancy a bargain" Froy

I don't know how they do it for the money.

+ 1 for Switch-backs.
Been back lots. They're starting more enduro in Malaga. The guides are great and the trails are fantastic

Don't get me wrong. Ride Sierra Nevada are great. We went there over 10 years ago and had a great time (apart from a major back injury for me ... but that's another story). Shaun is frequently remembered as one of the folk we are most jealous of.

Have been with Ride Sierra Nevada and Switchbacks.
Both excellent and highly recommended. Sierra Nevada involved more climbing with usually just one uplift in the morning. Switchbacks had enough climbing to be interesting but usually had several van uplifts each day.
Csilla at Ride Sierra Nevada makes the best sandwiches in Spain.
Personally prefer the trails with Switchbacks but would be happy to go again with either. Hoping to book next year's trip soon ๐Ÿ™‚
