Looking to replace my Nissan with something "van like" but with option to carry OAP parents in if needed, so car type then
But I've heard there are a few engine versions to avoid, it'll be 2 years old at most, probably diesel but I need educating on that front too
p.s. do the rear seats come out of a berlingo easily rather than just fold them?

I'm not sure what the variants are for the car version, but i have the 1.9 non turbo van and it is gutless to drive and mpg isn't that good compared to similar.
Have you looked at the Vauxhall Combo vans with the rear seats, fully removable, more van like and they are a few inches longer so bike fits in completely, in the Berlingo the front wheels have to slot in between front seats to fit in without taking a wheel off.
Have you considered a Fiat Doblo? Bucket loads of room inside and fun to drive with very good economy on the 1.9 multijet TDi.
I really miss mine but it was having random engine problems that no-one had ever seen before and couldn't find an answer to (including Fiat, independent diesel engine specialists, other garages). There seem to be plenty on the road with no issues though and I'm still tempted by another.
Avoid the blue one i smashed up in 2003 and then rebuilt...! lol 😆
Long as the 1.6 has a fsh and no mention of a turbo change then no issue , just get the oil pick up changed out inside the sump
On mine, a last year's, the back seats split 2:1 and either or both sides will come out. The bike goes in easily with the smaller side out, upright and wheels in. The bigger side is a bit awkward for one person to deal with, heavy and difficult to manoevre both ends into / out of the fixings.
1.6 petrol so can't help with engines. It isn't much bothered by side winds but the boxy shape feels head winds. Check prices on drive the deal . com
mine is a 1.4 petrol and the fuel economy is terrible, even driven slowly.
Like Slowoldgit, my 2003 model has split rear seats, which can be removed with a torx in about 2 minutes.
Get a diesel, so i have been told.
No screwdriver, tilt a seat fully forward, a little way back and it lifts out upwards.
As above said, 1.6 HDI (Dv6) is great but if it's early life was abused it will poss kill the turbo but is rare at main dealer level now to see this!!! Obviously I don't work I the "real world"!!!
Tip from the factory technical department, if possible before you buy a DV6 remove the vac pump,(x2 bolts)
There is a gauze in the vac pump if it's blocked solid with carbon and 5h1t its a good sign the servicing hasn't been done correctly in the past and it's turbo gauze is probably in the same condition.
As I've said from previous threads I've repaired/rebuilt horrific engine BUT if your buying at retail you don't want to buy hassle.

Tempted. Bored of my 1.6 petrol Citroen.
My 2.0HDI is fine at 110,000 miles and I hope for many more.
I've got a partner crew cab.
Can get 3 bikes with front wheels off and all kit in plus up to 5 passengers :-).
The 2.0 tdi is the one to get.. I had mine 3 years put 180k on it(courier work) and it doubled up as a bike wagon at w/ends 😀

2.0 hdi is the one to get they just keep going with regular servicing. 1.6 petrols are decent little motors aswell.
I've got a 1.6 hdi and it's been great. Drove down to France last week and came back loaded to the roof. I never use it for long journeys usually as the one downside is comfort on the big drives. Great for all the usual Berlingo bonuses.

Giving a lift to friends - both about retirement age like me - Sal got into the back and muttered about it being two steps up, for she is a shortarse. I was holding the door for her, so I said 'I'll see if Stannah do something to help'. She thumped me.
The point of this ramble is - it might be a bit of a climb for the oldies.
more that i need something with more than 2 seats, so not a van sadly
2.0hdi is fantastic ( it's what I've got ) but it's old and not been available for years ( 2006 if memory serves me ) and compared to the DV6 it's half the weight and the same power ( both 110 bhp if that's the spec you have.
And the fuel system is much more advanced so the road tax is £30 per year in most bhp specs
The 16v petrol is good not great fuel Ecco on long trips but fine round town the 8v is old and terrible on fuel but cheap to buy and lasts for ever.
Get the cambelt and water pumps done on time, had a couple of the 1.9 diesels where the belt had chaffed on the crank pulley/auxillary pulley and worn it so thin, it had got to the point the belt skipped, smashed the followers, but no damage to the valves.
Ive got a 2010 1.6hdi and been great so far, fits the bike in easy with a seat or two folded down, drives ok and averages nearly 50mpg most of the time (mostly shorter journeys) on a long run will do better.
I had a 2009 1.6 hdi (90bhp) and thrashed it for 97k - don't buy that one.
However it was fantastic. Just had routine servicing and one sticking central locking switch on the drivers door. Towed a trailer with boat fine, 3 teen kids in the back and camping stuff in the boot.
Only issue was fully loaded with trailer the bikes had to go on the roof and its a long way up!
Sliding doors help with access in and out the back.
Really miss the space now I have swapped cars!
All of the new shape ones are 1.6
The other engine sizes mentioned above are the old shape which is quite different, smaller, less good for bikes, and not as nice to drive.
The higher spec new ones come with a 1:1:1 split in the back,personally I have no bother getting the 2 seat out mine. As above it is heavy, but there's a knack. 3 bikes and 3 folk wheels on easy.
I'd avoid the 75hp hdi, and the petrols. I have he 90hdi which has been good, the 115 might be better, but also has more engine bits to service (forget what exactly it has extra).
I get a new car every 3 years and I am now on my 3rd berlingo.

Previous 2 were the 1.6 petrol vt's come with wipe clean PVC interiors, easily get 4 bikes and 4 occupants and kit in.
Not sure about the comments on getting the seats out, never had a problem.
Latest one is the ecodrive diesel. Only downside, is that they put carpet in the boot 🙁
mines an '09 1.6hdi (pug partner) but i only get 48mpg average - and 5 gears means its not great on m/ways but seems to do better round town.
road noise is the other issue, its a but hmmy at 70+
i wouldnt change it though, so versatile, easy to drive and we have the 60/40 split
if you take front wheels off, and the rear seats out the bikes can go long ways across the van!
also they have mounting points
only issue i have had is finding a roof rack, as mine doesnt have rails just holes !
