i've noticed that my crank engages around 3oclock a lot.

i'm not sure if this is just bad pedalling technique though or my bb?

the problem is more noticeable if I pedal with just one leg.

the problem is on the drive side.

Engages? Not quite sure what you mean.
If square BB check for rounded corner on axle/inside crank.
To check bearings hold both cranks and wiggle, then to check axle try to turn one one way and one the other.
Also, could be freewheel, how much play there before it 'bites'?

If the pedals turn a fair bit before you get any "bite" it sounds more like a freehub problem. You might need to have your rear wheel looked at.

Drop the chain off and check for free play/rotation of the crank/pedals.

Pretty sure you can use them with shimano BB's which are cheap on rose bikes.

FSA work with Shimano/Hope/King/FSA/etc BBs, it's only SRAM/Truvative which are a funny size.

There are 2 different FSA sizes - their carbon chainsets are different. I'd probably get the same again for simplicity.
