Between-two-trees width of 800mm bar fitted with SDG (Slater model, I think) grips is pretty much 820m; no outboard lock ring; hand position on the outboard edge. Moving those grips over to a 780 bar measures 800mm; hand position on outside edge. Moving those grips over to 760 bar measures 780mm; hand position on outside edge.

SDGs a bit skinny for my liking. Been comfortable in the past with Oury grips on an 800mm bar; outboard lock rings; hand position slightly inboard. So maybe 780mm outside edge of hands.

Is there a fat, squishy grip with no outboard lock ring, without the width extending properties of the SDGs so I can run bars with 780 between-two-trees width but with my accustomed grip width and comfort?

Or...

Is there a fat, squishy grip with the width extending properties of the SDGs that I could run on 760mm bars with a between-two-trees width of 780mm with my accustomed grip width and comfort?

Buy a hacksaw and use whatever grips you like?

Having a less bulky bike is really useful in lots of ways (e.g. moving bike in and out of a 4th floor flat; fitting in the car; zipping between trees).

If I can be in the same position on bars that are 780 end to end it is preferable compared to 800 bars. If I leave marks on the walls I get in trouble.

Maybe I'm just asking if there's a single lockring Oury equivalent

Doh. I'd forgotten those. OH's bike has a pair of the Specializeds and I'm sat within 3m of it...

They measure ~31.25mm diameter and seem very soft on the surface down to a hard core. The two year old Oury's on my bike are >32.5mm and seem to have more depth down to the core. Specialized's on a 780 bar do measure up at 790 end-to-end so may be the best and quickest answer.

I'm liking the look of those. Had GA2s before but the fat ones look mint.

Supacaz Grizips might suit your needs. 32mm rather than 32.5 but good and soft, wear suprisingly well (considering the softness) and available in veritable rainbow of colours.... https://www.merlincycles.com/supacaz-grizips-lock-on-grips-120633.html

I really like me - the end caps are now replaceble incase of any crash damage!

I find them much better than the regular GA2 withought being too big.

lol

seriously though. move about your bike more, dip a shoulder as you aproach the first tree trunk and practice tiny manuals (just a front wheel lift using a push through your pedals and weight rather than your arms) with a slight bar turn to get through gaps narrower than your bars.
