I got a rather expensive but very nice Rapha merino beanie for wearing under a helmet. It may have been costly but it's been worth every penny. I've used it for the past couple of years in everything from milder just to take the chill off days to -11C and freezing the zip on my jacket days. Superb! This one I believe:

Try this .

I've been using it for 3 years now, really good bit of kit. Fits under my A1 helmet with no problems.

+1 for the Rapha merino hat, got two of them now as for the next few months I'll need one to wear whilst the others' in the wash from being worn.

Icebreaker do some very nice less 'bikey' merino beanies if you want something for apres ride.

A buff.. Thinner under a helmet and more versatile with the position you can put it on. You can also just put it round your neck or even pull it up round your face and to rob the post office on friday

Currently the free beanie from mbuk, buff under the lid when it's cold enough.

Merino wool buff. Can be used on the bike, and then as a regular neck warmer day to day assuming you don't go for too lairy a colour.

I have one in cedar:

Can be picked up for around £16 at everyone's favourite Lonsdale warehouse.

If really cold, then another regular buff over the top.

Are you sure thats cedar? It looks more of a light olive, to me?

100% cedar.

It's a smidge lighter than 'suggestive sideways glance at some incredulous moss', but darker than 'whimsical nod to a lime's ghost'.

buff for under helmet, plus it makes a good lightweight hat for other occasions like camping where people are less likely to laugh at you for looking like a pirate.

Wooly hat with fleece band for forehead/ear comfort (not whole fleece lining - too hot) for colder. Try a bunch on next time you're near a snow and rock/ellis brigham other ski shops are available.

if you go for a cycling cap with a buff over, this gives you ear coverage and a peak to keep the wind/rain away from your specs

off the bike, whatever you like the look of
