So, ride the other morning with my pal who lives a bit further away.

Me - 2011 high zoot FS 29er, 5" travel. fat, not very good rider. ๐Ÿ˜†

Him - 1996 Scott thing with 450mm handlebars, v brakes and no suspension. Skinny, not fit, skills like a circus freak ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Terrain - high, very narrow, very tech, very rocky ridge. New to me.

Outcome - he skinned me. I could hardly ride 3 yds. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Result - I need either a pinpoint accuracy carbon rigid singlespeed, or a 160mm all mountain 26er ๐Ÿ™‚

Is he just a better rider? Do I need more bikes? Can someone please lend me some cash so the missus doesn't find out that 2 bikes is not enough? Help!

Jesus that was a tough ride. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Happy weekend to all!

Kev

When will people learn, its not the bike! most of it is down to the level of skill in the rider.

Although you can get bikes that over compensate the 'lack' of skill.

I've corrected that:

When will people learn, 29ers are sh*t

You clearly suck at riding bikes.

I suggest you get a proper mountain bike with less travel and learn how to ride it.

Go fully rigid and you'll soon get your skilz back, or die horribly.

He can ride a bicycle better than you, simple.

But if you enjoyed the ride, what's the problem?

And if you really want to gain his 1337 skillz, time to get practicing!

there is nothing wrong with the OP's skills of fitness level! its quite clear his friend is a freak of nature, and that the OP should invest in a shiny new bike

Don't worry - we've all been battered by a skinny git in their school gym kit from 20 yrs ago on a bike out of a skip at some point.

A vastly expensive bike will not help in the slightest, but you NEED to find that out for yourself. Happy shopping.

Which bastard's taking sneaky drawings of me on a saturday evening? oh, wait, the moobs are too small and there's not enough forehead. ๐Ÿ˜€

Rusty spanner: it's either that or the wrong pedals. flats or spds? ๐Ÿ˜‰

xiphon - i'd rather spend time fettling the perfect riding machine than actually riding. Are you mental? Practice?!? pfft... ๐Ÿ™‚

hiilsplease: have you met him? Seriously. And to think he thinks I'm a cliche. Oh, the dripping irony...

Actually, he revels at doing amazing things in a retro niche way: biking (as above bike, 20y old maroon tacky top, ancient pisspot), snowboarding (biking leathers and wooly gloves, natch) and worryingly, as it's his job, combustion researching. Computers? Pah, I'll just feel and listen to this test chamber... ๐Ÿ˜†

Marvellous posts people, made me get through the last hour of a brutal week!

Hugs! ๐Ÿ˜€

Kev

You need an 8 inch downhill bike and all the clobber.
Going downhill your additional weight gives you an advantage and uplifts cut out all that unnecessary climbing stuff! ๐Ÿ™‚

You need to undo his spokes, that'll sort him out
Get a 26 steel bike with decent tyers, sorted.
