No not the normal moaning, i actually like mine and have had many hassle free miles out of the two sets i already own. However i'm now looking for a new set of brakes for my 29er and so that i only have to keep one type of brake pads in my pack Elixir's are the obvious choice, but last time i bought some there was only 3 or 4 models in the range but it seems to have gone mad, there's now 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, R, CR and then all the top end XX and XO stuff as well. It's left me a little confused 😕

Does an easy to explain guide exist anywhere? and what order do they all sit in, prices seem to vary greatly between different stores and don't seem to be consistent with the order.

Thanks.

You missed X7, X9 ..

Though with almost nothing to back it up, I was under the impression that R, CR might be being replaced with 7 and 9?

It used to be that Elixir R had toolless reach adjust, CR also had a toolless contact adjust, CR carbon had carbon levers (though IIRC the brake was no lighter), any mag one had magnesium lever/caliper bodies. 5 were a fair bit heavier than Rs and lost the toolless lever reach adjust (requiring an allen key in an awkward position). If they're anyhthing like juicy's of old they'll also keep the ability for the lever to click forward about 1cm from the normal rest position. Not 100% sure what this is for
Elixir 3 was a tuny bit heavier than a 5, if they're like juicy's they'll probably loose the 2 bolt lever clamp and loose the lever going forward thing
No idea about 1's, lesser somehow probably

X7 etc appear to be a different colour (And pricier)
Also, original R's didn't have adjustable caliper entry hose's. Later ones did (and claimed weighed 8g more)

They all seem to have changed a bit now 1,3,5,7, etc etc. with 6 sided rotors (I quite liked the G2(juicy) and G3 (original elixir) rotors tbh) and maybe different shaped parts?

My CR's incorprate 15mins of pads out, pump pistons in/out to free up, repeat after a few months technology also. Made easier by the top loading pads these days though. 🙂

They are very powerful brakes though, & very light too. I have sevral older sets of Juicies on other bikes. They get some stick, & rightly so, but they are easy enough to fettle.

You could be right there with R, CR etc. being superseded, the Avid site only shows the numbered ones then the top end stuff.

Might just try and pick up a set of R's when i can then.

I think the R has been replaced with the 7 and the CR with the 9 for 2012. I picked up an unused set of 7s from someone paying the Hope tax on their new Specialized for about £100. They're great so far. Keep an eye on the classifieds.
