Anyone had experiences?
yep had problems all winter with my HT chainsucking. New chain, cassette etc... finally changed from Middleburn hardcoate middle ring (XT chainset) to a £12 Deore steel middle and had no problems since. I think that the steel ring has "more open" teeth, if you see what I mean, than the alloy one and hence doesn't hold a chain full of cack so much. I recommended this to a friend who was sufferring similarly over the winter (FSA chainset, On-one inbred) and his chainsuck problems have gone too. It's probably not the answer for everyone's problems but it worked for me!
alu granny vs steel granny - yes I have suffered. The alu granny get's ridges on it as it wears and this can catch the chain. Steel one will outlast the crank, I expect
middle ring ... I've not noticed
I think chainsuck seems to be a common Middleburn issue. I've got a 34T one on my XT chainset and when shifting down to my granny the bottom of the middle ring just doesn't want to let go. I've heard of others reporting the same problem.
I won't use alloy rings on my 456, gone back to steel deore ones and had no prob's since.
Yep my issues are middle ring, changing down to granny or when it gets really badly covered in krap not even shifting at all just drags it up at random times, so definitely time to replace.
What are the weight differences between steel and alloy inner/middle? About 50g?
I got rid of my chainsuck issues going from steel rings to middleburn hardcote and had no problems since.
i think the issue is nothing to do with what the chainring is made of, and everything to do with how worn the chainring is. New chainring no chainsuck, old ring chainsuck.
Or, just ditch your granny and MTFU. Problem solved.
My chainsuck started when I fitted a brand new Middleburn middle ring!
