I am trying to troubleshoot what I think is a shifter with excessive friction on the cable exit.

I could really do with having a quick look at another, as a comparison.
I can travel to test, I'm near Huntingdon so on the Cambridgeshire/Northamptonshire/Bedfordshire border.

why not take it to a bike shop ?
(did you replace the cable recently, i.e. just before this problem arose? maybe it's a different diameter to the spec (is it possible, even, to get a road brake cable in there by mistake ??)

The bike shop have offered to take it in to have a look, but its a 4 hour round trip before any time it takes them to come to the same conclusion.
The cable has not been replaced, it has been like this since new.
I really want to have a look (feel) of another identical shifter so I can either rule it out, or get a replacement sorted..
