Looking at the Shand bahookie mtb with belt drive and rohloff. This winter lark is wrecking my gears and want a simple set up. So considered this option.
I can imagine the hub is fairly weighty, ?
Thanks

I have this very setup. Having used alpine 8s for years I didn't really notice the change. When hopping back and forth between geared and hub gear you notice the shift in balance but it swiftly just becomes part of the feel of the bike.
As for the hub, its awesome. The range is huge and changing whilst stationary is a revelation. If I could afford it, every bike would have one.

Got three, one purchased in 2003, bombproof and reliable.

Only thing better is the Pinion, due to central location on frame, just got one with belt drive and love it, but too soon to judge reliability.

I remember militant graham ran a belt drive with his rohloff, raced 24 hr racing and concluded a chain was a more cost effective solution for his requirement (from memory small stones getting stuck in the belt reduced life span considerably)

There is also the new kindernay xiv hub which looks interesting 🙂

I have one on my 9zero7 where i love it.

It doesnt upset the bike the bike is balanced and the rear end doesnt hook up.

On my ti xc racing geometry 29eri was ready to sell the rohloff it was terible. I gave it a year of an attempt to get used to it and it still sucked. Rear end slammed into everything and the bikes light skippy feeling was ruined really noticable lump out back making the bike hang up and really hammered your butt and lower back where the xtr set up just skipped over the bumps on the same track.

It was also measuably slower on my local trails than doing the same trails on the same bike both before and after e rohloff experiment,

They are good bits of kits but they are not a magic one size fits all. Consider the bike carefully. Id love a mid. Mounted rohloff hub it would solve many of my gripes.

I have an Alfine 8 on my commuter/tourer which I love.

The way things are going with 1x11 drivetrains the weight distribution isn't all that different anyway! 🙂

I use a chain rather than a belt drive though. Apparently you have to get the chainline very accurate on a belt drive for it to work...

I had a shand belt drive and I've had a few rohloff builds. On the right bike they are brilliant but I wouldn't get a belt drive if I were buying again tbh

Didn't he have a history of kit-wrecking though?

He does/did a lot of miles, is a tall guy and rides hard and we live in area with some abrasive mud which is the reason I switched to a Rohloff many years ago.

The trashed belts did look impressive. I've not seen him on here for ages now I think about it.

Mmm, really nice, knowledgeable guy probably grew weary from memory of the slightly negative responses to some of his posts ratherbeintibago, still around on Facebook though 🙂
