I'm aiming to run a Nicolai Helius AC with a lefty - but will need a custom headtube. The carbon lefty I have is a med therefore has a 137mm space for the headtube.

Anyone out there running a lefty for all and what length headtube do you run to allow this successfully?

Anyone please?

Ash

It will depend on the stack height of the headset too. I've a bike here with a custom headtube for a Lefty. The head tube is 4.15 inches long or 105.41mm. That was designed around a Chris King headset, which has a stack height of 31.4mm. So 105.41+31.4=136.81.

As long as the overall height is less than the 137mm, it'll be fine. The sizes above though, get away without using any spacers which makes for a tidier setup.

Edit: Are you still supposed to the deep-insert, Reset headsets on Nicolai frames? I know you can now get a tapered 'Lefty for all', this might be your best bet too, as I don't know if you can get a 1 1/8" to 1.5" baseplate for the Reset?
I don't think it would be wise to just have a 1 1/8th headtube on a new, expensive frame.

I'd appreciate that Teeto

d45yth I don't know whether Nicolai could fit a tapered headtube to 105 ish so I may be better off with a 1.5 at least it would be more flexible in relation to future set ups

May sound like a stupid question - how would you adjust the headset bearings on a lefty for all?????

Me, on my nicolai, can't remember what length the steerer is but as you can see I run quite a few spacers under the stem. Could probably cut it down a little but of I were to change frames at any point I don't really fancy having to buy another lefty for all.

Loddrik - Could probably cut it down a little but of I were to change frames at any point I don't really fancy having to buy another lefty for all.

The fact that there's no spacers between the headset and top clamp means your Lefty won't fit a frame with a longer head tube.

Ash - You adjust the bearing preload the same as a normal headset. You still fit a star fangled nut and top cap.
There's a thread I started on MTBR about fitting the baseplate too.
Here's a diagram that will come in useful:

Quite true, never thought about it really, I guess it fitted my Mav with a 3cm longer head tube due to it having an integrated headset. Maybe I will take a hacksaw to it after all...
