Hi all, just wondering if anyone has had previous experience with the dropout mounted roof rack ? the one I am planning on using has purpose made mounts that the fork dropouts place onto, then insert and tighten skewer.

It looks like it may work but as I am travelling nearly 800 miles to Morzine with 8 bikes on the roof I would be grateful of any helpful advice

A riding buddy has the Thule Outrider 561 as he has a Carbon frame. Its very secure and when following behind his bike wobbles a hell of a lot less (virtually nothing) than the ones in the Mont Blanc carriers. They are lockable too and I guess a bit more secure as you can't ride off on the bike because the front wheel is missing.

If I used a roof carrier then I'd opt for one of these for sure

Mate of mine has got some of the Thule ones mentioned above. They seem a damn sight more solid than the bike mounts that clamp the downtube and strap the wheels in place.
Thinking of getting rid of my Atera mounts in place of these to be honest; look a lot better.

I have a couple of the Thule models mentioned above that I've used for about 10 years with road and disc brake equipped MTBs. I've always preferred the more secure dropout attachment method vs the two wheels on style, though as I'm driving the car I don't get to see what they're like on the road so it's interesting to read Carlos's comments. They came with some sort of adaptor for 'bolt through forks' though that's something about which I know nothing. You will, of course, need to ensure there's room for all those front wheels inside the vehicle Tweedviper.

if it's 8 mountain bikes it maybe worth checking overall roof loads vs. what the fixing points are rated for 🙂

I have a fork mounted and downtube mounted Thule, prefer the fork mounted one.

Only downside is its easier to leave your front wheel behind!

Brilliant thanks for all the replies, yes it is 8 bikes on the roof but it is on a 17 seater Transit (so plenty of room for front wheels) with a really good 3 bar roof rack which has a cage attached and is very strong.
I have a lot more faith now I have heard all your good replies.
Thanks everyone

As stated above, make sure you have the right adapter if you're using a bolt thru instead of a standard QR....Fork-up

I've had this one close to 100mph and it's fine......
