There seems to be conflicting info on this. I would most likely have a 30t chainring up front with 11-46 11 speed cassette on the back. Ideally I would run the medium caged xt mech but some recommend the long cage.

GS should be fine as it's good for 39T range: http://bike.shimano.com/content/sac-bike/en/home/components11/mountain/deore-xt-m8000/rd-m8000-gs.html

yes it says 42T max there but that was written before they released the 11-46T cassette.

The SLX GS does say it has a 41T capacity for 11-46T though so maybe different...Got both sat here as I wasnt sure which to fit to my FS.

I have a 46t sunrace with a medium xt mech and a 30t front and it works perfectly.

XT 11 speed medium cage mech with 11-46(Oneup) and 32 front for my P7 works a treat.

Running a 34 ring with 11-46 sunrace on my Hightower. Works fine and never hear any chain slap. Just take it easy on how many links you take out of the chain and play with the b screw.
