Just planning tomorrows ride & was wondering if anyone has ridden this? Starts from Cynwyd (nr Corwen & Llangollen)
It is a 'there & back' type ride into the Berwyn mountains. Totals about 32km, 8 km up a hill, 8 km down. Then turn round and do reverse. About 1000m of ascent.
Any good??

Did the Wayfarer from Chirk and on upwards just after Chernobyl, met a group of arrogant walkers who deliberately shut a gate in front of us, as we passed them noticed a dead sheep in a gully, sadly lying on its back, shouted to my mate thats one of those radioactive sheep, they always die legs upwards, youve never sen such fear on walkers faces as they beat a hasty retreat back down the trail.

Alo sas its a byway or was its open to gas guzzling 4 x 4,s and scrambler bikes,

Did the Wayfarer and started from Llandrillo near Corwen, next village from where Ivor Williams Trailers Factory is.

Did the bikefax route a couple of years ago, but started in Llanarmon DC.
The descent at point 8 described as "an extremely steep, fast tarmac road" really is as bad as it sounds, so you might want to try the descent to llandrillo. I've only done that stretch as a climb on a different route, but its longer & more off road. (more road between llandrillo & cynwyd though)
Someone more local may be able to recommend another descent.

I did this route about 15 years ago. In mid winter after a 3am session the night before with the biggest bunch of dik edz Stockport can muster.

After staggering out of a local B&B we started around noon in Llanarmon DC.

We reached a point of no return. One of lads cramped up bad somewhere exposed and cold. The party split up (contrary to rescue advice) into 'fact finding teams' with the official rescue party reaching their B reg Ford Orion after dark (which promptly broke down).

Seem to remember the pub in DC being open and rendering assistance.

Not proud of any of it. We narrowly avoided serious trouble. Taught me a lesson I badly needed.

I'm sure you'll have a blast!

From Cynwyd ride over to llanarmonDC. Then turn south and follow lane until it turns to footpath on map - it's not, been upgraded to permissive bridleway.

Then over the ridge between bronwen and berwyn and a 2 hugely fun bridleway descents choices lay in front of you.

Definitely the best Wayfarer route IMO although being Wrexham based I tend to start/finish in Llanarmon DC.

At this time of year definitely choose the northern of the two over Moel Pearce.

For a killer loop, add in the section of the Upper Ceiriog Way heading north out of Llanarmon DC before dropping down the track to Pandy or Glyn Ceiriog depending on how long you've got left. Head back on the road or via the trails on the east side of the valley. GPX

I wondered how long it would take for someone to bring up 4x4's using the Wayfarer ๐Ÿ™„

As far as I know, there is still a TRO on a section of it due to water damage, so you shouldn't meet many cars up there.

Big difference between shouldn't and won't. Seen a few the last couple of times we have been up that way.

Doug, I know, hence why I used shouldn't. It's a shame that some people choose to ignore the TRO and create more problems, rather than keep off and let any repairs be completed.

That's the one Elmo

Watch out for the thorns everyone.......pssssssssssssssst!

IIRC it took us almost an hour to ride the following mile as everyone fixed flats that were going down at different rates. Someone literally 'lost' a chain and as for the idiot who tried to use water as their fork spring medium. :shakeshead:

That sounds like a reasonable morning ride on the cx bike next time I'm up at my parents.
