Too many bikes in a tiny garage so trying to move some of the less used ones out into our hallway. There are a few ceiling hoist types out there that all seem the same design but at random price points. Has anyone any recommendations or gotcha's to watch out for or has anyone even seen an alternative such as something that attaches to the wall and then pulls them up to the ceiling. They all look fairly ugly unfortunately but it's a bike stuck on a ceiling, there is a limit to what can be done
^^ your hallway appears to have capsized?
There used to be some plastic drain pipe affairs available in bright colours that held the top tube. My googling failed to find them though.
There's also a variety of shelves with a groove or slot for a top tube that came up on Etsy/Amazon when I looked for the drain pipe things.
I use a cheap pedal hanger with the front tyre just touching the shelf.
I'm quite liking that actually. Seems to look nicer than just hanging from the ceiling. Just need to see how I will get it high enough without getting a stepladder out. It's now a bike I use often but would still like it reasonably available
I’ve used the Aldi hoists in the past. Cheap, work well enough, not beautiful
Pulleys like an old clothes drying creel. 2 hooks for bike.
Google “ creel clothes dryer”. You’d just need the pilots and rope.
Less used bikes... can you not hang in the garage or tuck behind the sofa etc. Almost feels more sensible to have the everyday commuter easily accessible in the hallway rather than something thats going to collect dust 🙂

The hallway is a bit narrow to have a bike in it and I tend to switch between 3 bikes regularly. The garage ceiling is too low for anyone over 6ft to stand in comfortably as it is. I agree with the concept though, stuff you use regularly should be to hand so the most used bike gets stacked on the wall just inside the garage door.
Step aside amateurs.
@joshvegas - How do you get the top bike up? One of the bikes is a tandem but it's not any heavier than a full sus so lifting it should be fine really
As far as hight goes...
Very high. As long as you can pick the bike up near the axles it's very easy to hook on. Just make sure the pedal is pointing up.
They can slip a bit especially with hard tails where the weight is far forward and there isn't a balancing action at the rear.
They don't fall off the wall but they do rotate.
A lip is better but as above better it's low enough that the from tyre drops onto it rather than trying to get both tyres.
I have usually cheap Amazon hoists and I suspect that they're all pretty much the same, just different pricing. So far I've not had any problems but you do need to make sure that where you attached for hoists to in the ceiling is absolutely rock solid. I did in my garage so essentially I could just put a 2x4 against the ceiling screwing it into the joists. This then gave me a firm base to attach the pulleys to. Getting the right distance between the pulleys is irritating but doable.

looks like you are somewhat taller than me as I can't reach above my doors, but looks like it could work with a step stool so I'm still liking the idea

I can't work out if they are all the same or there are some cheap bendy copies as you are correct, the pricing is completely random.
I had DIY pulleys in a couple of flats, if I was doing that again I would be looking at snaps etc solutions - there are neat brackets to hang the bike by one pedal but you'd need something additional to keep it horizontal.
Dunno, what drugs is it on and does it have the same habit in other rooms?

5'8" that was the top of my reach on tip toe. The bike was only 8kgs though so not taxing. That's an Embra door so not small. Remember you get the length of the crank aswell. Note. I did need to take the other bikes down for the top one. The Kona and charge could just be taken as needed.
A tandem would work really well. Very stable with two hooks.
A little step wouldn't be an issue.
