I need to replace the brakes on my Trek Procaliber which are some awful low end shimano (m400 or something)
Most of my riding is South Downs, easy bike park trails and longer distance XC stuff.
Was going to get the slightly older SLX for about 150 but saw these for 100 with rotors. They look a bit less boring, are a bit lighter and still use mineral oil and have easy to get pads….but do they work? I don’t need masses of power but don’t want an on/off switch….
Ive got the really cheapo Clarks on my fat bike and they are absolutely fine but feel a bit cheap and tinny to use plus the levers are wobbly. It suprising as they cost about 30 quid all in!
Anyone got a pair of the C2s?
Nowt wrong with the low end Shimano MT200 or even the 4 piston version (MT420). I put 15,000 miles on a pair on my commute bike and they are as reliable as new.
No idea about those Clark brakes, sorry. If you're wanting cheap then I would go for the £45 SRAM DB8 set from Banana Industries over the Clarks. They've been no issues on one of my bikes.
The existing shimano brakes are pretty awful to be honest. I’ve done about 2000km off road on them which is slightly different to commuting and no matter what pads I use they feel wooden and unresponsive.
I was really asking if anyone had experience of C2s not random other brakes (of which I’ve used plenty too).
Great thanks - i obviously searched for an existing thread but…..you know.
All users but 1 seem very positive so I think I’ll grab a set. I’m a sucker for Cnc!
I’d steer clear - I had a set of the CRS 4’s and they look brilliant. Unfortunately, they’re utter shite. And so is Clarks customer service - never again.
I’ve just replaced them with a set of the DB8’s mentioned above. They’re a far better brake. Note the Banana Industries ones don’t come with bar clamps. Sport & Leisure were doing them with clamps for good money.
I've not used them, but when I worked at a bike shop I probably sold and fitted 50 sets.
Never had any issues and customers seemed happy.
Banana Industries do the clamps for £10 as well. I just used the Code ones I had already. Great brakes though.
Fitted a set of Clarks CRS C2's to my GF's new bike... She's a cautious rider, didn't want anything too powerful, but also didn't want to spend a huge amount and at the same time keen to stay away from Shimano's budget 3/4 finger levers... Anyway...
So far, so good. I've only ridden them briefly myself, and they're absolutely not the strongest stoppers, but they're smooth and consistent for sure. They do feel a bit firm and lacking in modulation compared to some, but it's not a biggie. They take the ubiquitous Deore shaped pad which is good... They look and feel a little like a cheaper version of a Hope Mono Mini from say 20yrs ago in use, which is no bad thing for what they are to be honest, and certainly not for the price I paid (£44.99 on their ebay site for a PAIR WITH ROTORS!!!)... They'd be no use for me on my eBike, but for an XC bike under a lighter rider, they seem fine.
There's a good chance I'm being stupid, but why would anyone sell brake levers without clamps?
Can't say a random brake manufacturers bar clamp features heavily in my spares box.
Is there some new standard of mounting I'm not aware of, does it involve glue?
I presume because they’re OEM brakes and can be paired with Matchmaker clamps for direct mount shifters or just plain band clamps.
