Anyone ever used a car moving service to do a route?

Hello all, doing SDW in July with some mates (well, Petersfield to Eastbourne) and was wondering if there was some kind of service where i can get someone to drive my car to Eastbourne for us.

I found DriiveMe which looks like it does it. It’s coming in at £153.

Wondering if there is another platform etc anyone knows of?

Unless there's a strong reason to have the car...
Train it...

Although.... what date in July? If I'm free, I'll ride to Petersfield, then drive your car to Eastbourne for you 🤷‍♂️

No space for a family member who is already insured to drive it? Would surely be cheaper than paying someone...
Rather than a driver, how much is a garage to transport the car?

There might be an opportunity for a thread where people doing a route in one direction could make contact with people doing it in the other, so that one party could bring the other's car back. Note that it doesn't work if they both do it!

DrP, isn’t the train into London and then back out to Winchester?
I did it a good few years ago after bivying near Eastbourne, wasn’t nicest thing being on the train stinking.

Drive to Eastbourne the day before the ride and dump the car, then get the train back to where you want to start?
Don't forget the car keys when you start riding!

Whats the excess on your breakdown cover?
Mine will take me/my car to anywhere in the UK, £40 excess which is a lot less than £153, just need a 'breakdown'...

just need a ‘breakdown’…

Wont that be kinda tricky when the breakdown is the car is a 100 miles away?
I will happily admit my mechanical skills are so so but I would be asking questions at that point.

For OP I would guess so long as you have two car owners in the group it would be best for to have those two set up a ferry service and the rest to pay lots of beer/food for the service.

No, car has 'broken down' here. We don't want to ruin our ride so if you could drop it off outside this garage in Eastbourne we'll make our own way back later...

Stick a bike in the back of the car to get you back to the start of the ride?

You should try an all-nighter where the dew mixes with the animal excrement for a full-body experience. My mate and I sat apart because we couldn’t stand the smell of each other 🤣

I just googled.

Are you seriously looking at spending 153quid to move a car 60miles?!

Just get the train either the day before after dropping the car off or just suck up the what, 45minute? train journey?

Think I'd find a Travel Lodge or similar bike friendly place and make it a 2 day return journey.

A taxi is going to be cheaper than the £153 quoted. Lock bikes up or leave a person sitting there, get a taxi to your car. Or do in reverse, drop bikes off drive car to end point taxi back to bikes. Done the same when walking SW coastal path.

It’s all quite complex…basically I live in Tonbridge and a mate from India is coming over to ride part of SDW with me and some mates from London.

They are getting train down first thing fri and then train home sat evening. We can’t get train to petersfield Fri morning because we have to go into London first and it’s commuter time so no bikes allowed.

Train from Eastbourne to Petersfield is a ballache. And then it’s a 90mik drive back to Tonbridge

drP yours sounds like a potentially awesome solution!

We are riding Friday 15 and Sat 16 July.

So if you can get the car back to us on Saturday eve by around 6pm that would be amazing!

No, but I paid less than that to move a car considerably further Via Shipley (and not using your petrol either). Might be worth getting more quotes if you're set on that idea.

So when do you want the car moved, does it matter as long as it's there before Saturday pm?

Assuming you have 2 keys, I live in Guildford and have a Brompton, which is a 30 min train ride / £9 from Petersfield, if you leave somewhere accessible on Friday I could collect Saturday am (early) drive it to Eastbourne, stick in in a long stay car park (just checked and you can prebook NCP Trinity Place for £6.95) and then train home

https://www.ncp.co.uk/prebook/city/products/?searchType=city&carpark=Eastbourne+Trinity+Place&arrive-date=16%2F07%2F2022&arrive-hour=08&arrive-minute=00&depart-date=16%2F07%2F2022&depart-hour=20&depart-minute=00&promo-code=#booknow

The return is further and looks like £22 with my railcard. So would cost about £31 plus my time, which I'd take as a charity donation with you to decide who / how much (ie don't pay me), you of course would have to sort insurance and make sure enough petrol in the car as well as car park.

If interested pm me and we can try to sort out.

Theotherjonv this could be ideal. If you are sure, I’d be up for this. Let me do some more working out - need to get another key cut, which I’ve been meaning to do anyway. Thank you! Will DM you tomorrow

Try shiply.com

I once bought a car unseen on the south coast, some bloke (trade plater) picked it up and drove it to cumbria for me for £300 inc fuel.

Sure you could stipulate a day and time in your request.

@DrP
Never knew there was a direct train route from Eastbourne to Winchester. Always thought it went via London. Very handy to know.👍

@theotherjonv

Thanks for reminding me, if it were ever needed, what a great place this forum is.

@poopscoop
You need to change at Brighton and sometimes Southampton.... but...it's still cruising the south coast... never goes to London...

(Of course, There ARE ones that also go into London too...)

Is the train from winch to eastbourne along the south coast any quicker than going via london though? There are potentially more changes and it's not exactly a quick service. Might be a bit cheaper though

The good thing about the coastal route is that you can look out of the window and spot the hills that you just rode over.
